17th Annual Change of Watch & Commodore’s Ball

Past Commodore Don Mills

Marco Island Yacht Club held it’s Seventeenth Annual Change of Watch and Commodore’s Ball on January 19th. The festivities began in the Courtyard as the Bridge and Past Commodores gathered. Past Commodore Bob Winterhalter swore incoming Commodore Jeff Comeaux into office as Members, family and guests looked on. The American flag was lowered as onlookers sang God Bless

America, led by Chaplain Alan Sandlin and his wife Linda. The flag was folded and presented to the new Commodore. The celebrations continued upstairs in the Harbour Room with a lovely meal prepared by Chef Bob and his Staff. The room was transformed by Pam Dorr, Diana Winterhalter, Mary McKeown and Sandy Wallen. Dancing followed to the sounds of Classics II. Everyone got up to dance and even formed a conga line! Thanks to Kathleen Douglas for the many great photos from the evening.

We have a big February coming up at MIYC, highlighted by our beautiful Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday the 16th. This colorful ceremony invoking good fortune for boaters is a tradition that goes back centuries and we are proud to uphold it on Marco Island. We invite all boating clubs on the island to participate with us. If you haven’t yet registered your boat to participate, I urge you to do so now. You can download the registration form here. Complete it and return it to Roy Hershberger at drhkch@aol.com. He’ll send you everything you need to know to participate. For Club Members who just want to watch the festivities, you can gather at the Burgee Bar or the Pointe (upstairs veranda) for great viewing, then stay for a delicious lunch and music by DJ Steve Reynolds. Make your lunch reservation by calling the Club at 239-394-0199. To properly respect the pomp and ceremony of this event, we are upgrading our recommended dress for the luncheon and suggesting that men wear jackets--preferably our Club jacket; ties are not necessary. You won’t want to miss this event. It’s a great time to bring guests as well! I’d also like to remind all boaters to get your Safety Inspection if you haven’t already done so. It’s free, it’s quick and easy to do, and we will be requiring this for participation in Club events going forward. Safety is paramount when you’re on the water. Here’s a link to more information: Safety Inspection Speaking of safety, I encourage you to sign up for a CPR class. You never know when this knowledge could save a life! Space filled up quickly for the first class being held on Monday, February 11th, but our Safety Officer, Trevor Haworth, is working to schedule another class later in February or in March. Watch your e-blasts or contact Trevor Haworth at trevor@cgsusa.com for more information. Finally, on the topic of safety, I ask all of our boaters to review our new MIYC Guidelines for Boaters. The Guidelines contain lots of very useful reference material that can make your boating experience both safer and more enjoyable. You can always find this document (along with the info on Vessel Inspections and the Waiver and Indemnification form) on the password protected side of our website under Key Documents. STORE HISTORY :

• First housed in the Antaramian construction trailer along with the Dick Shanahan, marina slip sales rep and Dockmaster, Elmer Wheeler. Clubhouse didn't exist yet. • Inventory consisted of tee shirts, caps, burgees, coffee mugs and license plates. Today's inventory consists of over 110 different items. Classifications besides logo merchandise consists of coastal and handmade goods. • Logo changed because Antaramian owned the first one. • Club was originally MARCO ISLAND SAILING AND YACHT CLUB • Current store location (same) consisted of counter and back shelves that were designed by Jean Mathews, the past owner of True Value Hardware, now ACE. We now have moved down the hall using up every possible inch of space we can find! • BUYERS/COMMITTEE CHAIRS were in chronological order - Jean Mathews, Alice Jobe, Marsha Riss and Grace Pantano. VEGGIE AND COOKIE CARRYING SHOW MODELS in order of appearance, were Kathy Caruso, Don Deganutti, Kimberly Porter, Jon Holt, Dale DeFeo, Kathleen Douglas, and Henry Stanley. They stole the show - wonderfully entertaining while displaying Ship's Store merchandise from clothing to home goods. They did such a wonderful job that over $1,100.00 was sold that day and the next! Merchandise discounts and all profits going to the Club - what could be better? New inventory just in or just about to be - for Men - Camp and Tattersall Shirts and for Women 7 NEW styles in ICANTOO/Sun Moda tops in a variety of fabrics. It's Not Too Early to be Thinking about Mardi Gras! Jan. 6 th is Kings Day, also known as Twelfth Night. It marks the beginning of the "Carnival" season in New

Orleans which culminates on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). Mardi Gras is always the day before Ash Wednesday and the date varies each year with Easter. This year it is March 5, and the Club will be celebrating it that evening. Carnival Season is the period between Kings Day and Mardi Gras. It is a period of parties, masked balls, and of course parades. New Orleans will have over 50 parades featuring more than 1,000 floats, about 600 bands, and more than 140,000 participants. The first 2 were last night, the krewe of "Joan of Arc" marched through the French Quarter, and the "Funny Forty Fellows" paraded in street cars down St. Charles Ave. in costume and throwing beads and doubloons. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 5 at MIYC so you won't miss out on the fun. And be thinking of your costume so you will be part of the fun. Reservations - 239-394-0199

Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge.

Port Captain

As the new Port Captain I have spent the past month getting up to speed with the requirements of the position and learning my way around the Marina. Living across from the Marina, it is very easy to see the boats coming in and welcome them to port. I am

looking forward to getting to know people on more of a first name basis and helping to make them feel welcome to use our facilities during their stay. With few slips available, and the transition from the holiday season, we had only 8 transient visitors in January. I expect to see more during the next few months. I want to give a BIG Thank You to past Port Hershberger for all her help and information during this transition. Jill Kiley - MIYC Port Captain

Chairman’s Report

Beware Phishing Attempts Though I already sent this note out as an email, I think it is worth repeating as we all need to be vigilant as hackers are always present. Computer hackers and phishers have discovered our Club! What is Phishing? A Phishing attack is a form of fraud using email that looks legitimate but leads you to a fake website for malicious purposes. The email may ask you respond to an urgent request, provide bank or credit card information, or provide a computer ID and password. I know many of you have been receiving emails that appear to be from a Club member or Club Officer asking you to pay an invoice amount or perhaps open a file. Do not respond to those emails. If you have a question, call the Club or the individual. Do not forward these emails , as you will be helping the hackers and phishers extend their reach. Following are 6 simple tips to spot phishing attacks. 1. An email has improper spelling or grammar. This could be misspelled word in the address or document or the grammar in the document is improper. When in doubt, delete the email and do not forward it. The domain address of the sender is different than the purported sender or sender’s organization. When the email appears to be from a trusted contact, but looks like the message is improper, you can double check the full email address. Often times it will be a different address (with small spelling changes or extended address information) than your trusted contact. The email urges you to take immediate action. If you get a request to take immediate action, it is probably a phishing attempt. Do not respond. Instead call the individual or go onto the website directly and confirm. The email indicates you have won a contest you did not enter. When you get an email that indicates you have won something or that is purported to be responding to a request you did not make…delete it. The email asks you to make a donation. Never respond to donation requests via email. Many organizations, such as the Red Cross, have reported fraudulent websites that when accessed will implant malware on your computer and steal your data. The email includes suspicious attachments. If there is an attachment from an organization from which you have not requested a document, delete the email without opening the attachment. You can always contact the organization directly to confirm their request. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Due to the number of phishing attacks and other incidents, we have initiated a comprehensive review of the Club’s computers and computer network. We have initially discovered a number of issues that need to be addressed. There are

security issues, outdated software issues, network issues, and computer hardware issues. We are developing a prioritized list to address the most serious issues first. However, addressing the issues at the Club will not stop the types of phishing attacks many members have recently received. That is because it appears that the hackers already have email address lists from the Club. We do not know how they received them. It could have happened in a number of ways. For our members, you should consider several actions to protect your private information and enhance your computer security: • Be vigilant for suspicious emails (as noted in the 6 tips above); • Make sure anti-virus software is loaded on your computer…and activated. • Consider installing and activating Firewall software on your computer. • Consider, in extreme cases, changing your email address. It is unfortunate that individuals wishing to access Member’s private email information or potentially steal information or funds have victimized the Club and our Members. However, it is a reflection of the time we live in, and taking adequate protection measures is critical for each of us. If you have not reviewed your computer security recently, I urge you to contact a reputable provider to do so. Reviewing your personal computer security is not something the Club can or should do. As we address issues uncovered in the review of the Club’s computers and network, we will keep you advised of new or additional information that might affect your personal computer security. Member Events By Angela Holt

It’s been a great start to the New Year. January 2019 was filled to the brim with fun events including White Elephant gift exchange, karaoke, Lunch and Learn, and a special Book Club presentation by Tom Williams. Members surprised us when they grabbed the mic and sang their hearts out on January 12 at karaoke. This was the official opening of the Burgee Bar which now has expanded hours. The Lunch and Learn series was kicked off with Dr. Peggy Frazier, our resident Pharmacologist, giving us a talk on healthy life styles while we dined on a delicious lunch prepared by Chef in keeping with ‘fine food that is good for you”. The luncheon was paired with a fashion show brought to us by Sandy Wallen and the Ship’s Store and featuring Members as models. The Commodore’s Ball and Change of Watch were spectacular and our Members looked especially elegant in their finery. And what would January be without our special Trivia Night. Ellie Everitt and Deb DeVries presented the questions. We had cocktails at the Burgee and then competed in teams to crown the Masters of Trivia.

February will bring the Super Bowl Party on February 3; Cooking with Chef Bob on February 7, the second in a series of Lunch and Learn; and Dancing Under the Stars, a lovely way to dine casually at the Burgee Bar and dance in the courtyard. Nevada Smith will entertain.

Angela Holt Chair - Member Events

And what would February be without a Valentine’s Dinner for Lovers of Fine Food and Dancing. This promises to be a special night for Members. All these special events are coupled with Book Club, Theater Night at Artis, Couples’ Bridge, Twilight Golf, Fishing Club, Canasta, Ladies’ Bridge, and Water Aerobics. And, of course, the reason we join a yacht club...boating events at midday and sunset. MIYC has something for everyone.

Community Outreach

Many members sit on more than one committee, so I'd like to tell you about our Club's Community Outreach Program which I coordinate. This past year our Members have embraced and supported the Marco Island Yacht Club Community Outreach initiatives generously! The following are the ongoing organizations that we support and ask that you continue to give of your time and your donations in 2019! Toys For Tots Our toy drive was a great success overfilling all our donation bins. We had a number of bicycles donated and others purchased with funds raised on our Boaters Night donation drive event. Our Daily Bread Food Pantry On Marco Island, 40% of our school children are on Federally subsidized food for breakfast and lunch and Manatee Middle School on Hwy 41 has 94% of their students on Federally subsidized food programs. The Food Pantry is the only pantry between Everglades City and Naples. The Pantry served over 26,600 people in 2018, including families and seniors. As you do your shopping, please continue to purchase non perishable items and donate them in the basket in the lobby of the Club. Being a 501C3, the Pantry can also always use cash donations and of course, your time to volunteer ! Reefs We started an initiative to purchase and install Ocean Habitat reefs for our Members and also donate reefs to people in Everglades City to help them clean up their canals and improve water quality. Thus far, we have purchased 12 reefs, 8 for Club members and 4 donated to Everglades City to be installed the end of this month. Should you have an interest in this program, please contact Dwyn von Bereghy for more information and ordering. Marco Patriots As most of your know, Marco Patriots was formed during hurricane Irma, as a rapid response group and has evolved into a great charity here on our island serving basically anyone who is in need. Whether it be food, clothing, finding housing, home repairs, etc., they are there! We have been proud to help them raise donations at the Christmas Boat Parade event held at the Club and have donated to their various fund raisers throughout the year. If you are not a member of the Patriots, we urge you to join and get involved in their wonderful work.

Marco Island Yacht Club Extended Cruise to: Naples Sailing and Yacht Club The January Extended Cruise to

Naples Sailing & Yacht Club was short but quite busy. After a Pot Luck Happy Hour, the Cruisers headed to Naples Botanical Gardens for an informative talk given by Dr. Jerry Jackson - The Eyes Have It. How animals use eye shaped markings for protection.

Next morning - Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. A 2 1/2 mile boardwalk through a Cypress Swamp. Hikers saw lots of birds and a couple of tiny gators. That evening - The Seafood Buffet at NS&YC. An amazing array of delicacies. The Cruisers were joined by Members who drove up from Marco Island for the occasion. Next morning, Cruisers readied the boats for the trip back. The Day Cruisers arrived and joined the Extended Cruisers for a lovely lunch in the Club. Then all headed out for the beautiful trip back to Marco Island. Thanks to Peggy & Pete Frazier for planning this fun trip!

Extended Cruises

MIYC Extended Cruises are scheduled so that you can participate in part or all of the itinerary. Land Cruisers are welcome to join us by car or ride along and we will arrange for hotel accommodations either at the marina or nearby. Some boaters also prefer to stay on shore. The availability of slips, particularly during the season, is always an issue so make your reservations now so you don't miss the fun. The trips feature events and meal planning so we need your reservation to help us plan. All full members are invited to join the fun and put new life and laughter into your time on the water! If you have not cruised in this area before you will be able to learn from experienced cruisers and have a relaxing trip. Now’s your time to enjoy the epitome of MIYC boating – don’t miss out! MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, February 21st 11:30am

Fishing and Fun on the Osa Peninsula! Six MIYC Members enjoyed serious fishing and lighthearted fun on the Fishing Club’s trip to Costa Rica! The big ones were biting, including Pacific Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna up to 50 pounds, Mahi Mahi, Roosterfish and several varieties of Jack. Ecotours through the rain forest viewing exotic birds and monkeys, a biking adventure and a tour of a cocoa plantation were also the order of the day. Fabulous Ahi Tuna and other fresh fish were regulars on the menu each evening, and after dinner the intrepid adventurers shared lots of laughter over competitions in ping pong, pool and other games. Jeff Comeaux - Commodore MIYC

Next Fishing Club Meeting Our next meeting will be on Thursday, February 21 at 11:30a.m . at the Burgee Bar. We’ll plan upcoming local events as well as a June trip to Islamorada to fish for tarpon.

M I Y C B o o k C l u b Thursday, February 28 th 11:30 am Please join us for our February Book Club Luncheon

Presenter Book Title Denise Schwartzman Devil in the Grove

A brief overview: In July 1949, four black men in a deeply racist Florida (the “Groveland Four”) were accused of raping a white woman. Two narratives run in parallel through the book. First is the story of Thurgood Marshall’s (future first African- American Supreme Court Justice) rise in the LDF. Second is a methodical, almost day-by-day recreation of the nightmarish events (segregation, bigotry, and state-sanctioned violence) that took place in the small town of Groveland, Florida. Using unprecedented access to both the full and unredacted Groveland FBI case files, and also to usually confidential case files from NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, journalist Gilbert King revisits an oft-overlooked case, with its accuser, whose testimony was patently false; defendants, who suffered terribly as a consequence; local police officials and lawyers who persecuted and prosecuted them; and their lawyers, who showed remarkable courage and perseverance in seeking justice. Thomas Friedman wrote in his New York Times review that Devil in the Grove is a “must-read, cannot-put-down history” and the Pulitzer Committee’s citation describes it as “a richly detailed chronicle of racial injustice.” Our MIYC Book Club meetings are held the last Thursday of each month, 12:00 noon until 1:30 PM. Luncheons are book-themed creations by our Chef Bob Aylwin, and always delicious. The book presentation and overview begins with the salad course. Discussion at each table proceeds with the main course, and a group discussion and wrap-up is with dessert. Please join us - you will not be disappointed! Our remaining selections, dates, and presenters are:

What a tremendously busy month. The full- Time Members, returning snow birds and several new Members are all enjoying the numerous activities the Club has to offer. Thanks again to Angela Holt and the Events Committee for all the wonderful events and growing activities, offering something for everyone. We now have a Mah Jongg group meeting every Tuesday and couples bridge meeting monthly. Be sure to check out the Anchor Lines for all the activities you might want to join. The attendance for Boater’s Night and the Sunset Cruise has reached record numbers. The Commodore’s Ball was a huge success thanks to our outgoing and incoming Commodores Bob Winterhalter and Jeff Comeaux. Chef Bob, Pam Dorr and the entire staff did an amazing job decorating, setting-up and servicing over 120 attendees, also a record attendance. If you missed the New England Clambake you missed some fantastic food and a magnificent evening. I mentioned in my last article how important it is to make your reservations early. Chef and Pam rely on the number of reservations for these events to purchase the correct amount of food and schedule the appropriate Staff. This becomes very difficult to do if you wait until the day before the event or the day of the event to make a reservation. On the other hand, we realize something might happen where you need to cancel your reservation. Please refer to Club Rules, “Reservations and Cancellations”. Some Club updates: The small freezer for the downstairs kitchen has arrived and been installed. The shades and cornice for the Bridge Room that Building & Grounds ordered have been installed, thank you Mary McKeown. The Operations &HR

pictures in the hallway for the Bridge and Board are almost 100% complete. The burgee flags over the Dockside Bar have been r e a r r a n g e d . B o b Winterhalter’s picture has been added to the wall of P a s t C o mm o d o r e s , congratulations. I have been informed there is no such thing as Isinglass anymore. It is referred to as soft clear PVC or Strataglass. So, the soft clear PVC on the

upper lanai has been 85% installed by Marco Canvas with an estimated completion by the end of January. Staff Updates: Chef has hired a new full-time chef/cook for the season. This will help provide better service for our Dining Events and Burgee Bar. At the beginning of January eight employees completed CPR, defibrillator and first aid training which was provided by the Marco Island Fire Rescue Department. Trevor Haworth, our Training and Safety Officer, has scheduled the same training for some of the Bridge Members and their spouses in February. Remember the Club will be open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday Brunch. Our next Grand Sunday Brunch is scheduled for February 10 th . The Burgee Bar is open Wednesday through Saturday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

See you at the Club, Robert J DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman Past Commodore
