TROPHIES OF GOD’S GRACE (Testimonies by former students and graduates of BIOLA)

ALUMNEWS By INEZ McGAHEY

Don ’32 and Doris (Schluntz) Hillis, Orient Crusades: “Only a happy combi nation of faith and works can change a tangled forest into a ripened harvest. Faith . . . sees the vision; works . . . clears the land. Orient Crusades is having an increasing share in the Latin American harvest. Gospel ads appearing in secular newspapers and in Christian magazines are being read by thousands of people. Scores of students are studying the Light of Life Correspondence Courses. 200,000 Spanish tracts are just off the press. 10,000 copies of “El Suplemento de la Voz” are published for the Christians of Argentina every month. 100,000 copies of La Voz are published for non-Christians every month. The provision of a Jeep for Keith Bentson in Argentina is urgent.” Alvin ’36 and Minnie (Wallace) ’35 Lewis, Orinoco River M ission, S o u th America: “We celebrated the nineteenth birthday of the Las Delicias Bible Institute May 16. The following Sunday nine stu dents and five faculty members visi'ed in fifteen congregations with programs to celebrate Institute Day in the churches. Two men and two women were grad uated June 29 from the advanced course The boys will be going into pastorates. Betty Nichols ’54, Overseas Missionary Fellowship, Mindoro: “Though we saw few visible results in the Mamburao Evan gelistic Campaign, it has opened many new contacts for further follow-up. During the spring or hot season, we settled into concentrated language study and passed our section examinations; also we were able to make several dry season tribal surveys. Our main emphasis this year is on home visitation. We spend our mornings in language study and the aft ernoons in visiting and in message prep aration, jail services, and children’s classes. For seven months we have been holding weekly jail services. Prior to our going to the jail for services, another group never showed any interest. Now they have begun coming regularly. Pray that the prisoners may discern the truth of the Gospel.” Violet Lopes ’47, Los Angeles: Fur lough is a busy time for her. “Following Summer School . . . I had just one free day before leaving for Child Evangelism Conference and work with the classes in DVBS . . . I am taking further training at Biola. I began with the Summer Ses sion. It was quite a mental shock to say the least! After nine years of speaking, studying, and thinking in Portuguese, I found it difficult to shift back into the use of English.” Betty Kroeker ’43, International Child Evangelism Fellowship Director in Ger many: “Pray for our camps working with boys and girls. Children have accepted the Lord as Saviour and others rededicated their lives. Pray for the classes in Luebeck and for the meeting with the teachers that we can get a regular teacher training class started.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Mrs. Doris Gould is the wife of the Rev. Milton C. Gould, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Downey and a grad uate of 1947. Mrs. Gould attended BIOLA in 1945 and 1946, and also worked in the Superintendent of Men’s office. She contacted poliomylitis in August, 1953 and is now completely paralyzed from the chest down. The rest of her body is partially paralyzed with only three fourths of her normal breathing capacity left. She has had four ortho pedic hand operations. Her three chil dren are Kathy, 8, Milton Charles, Jr., 9, and Diana, 11. She reveals what Paul meant when led by the Spirit he wrote: “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake” (Phil. 1:29). very close to me those first never-end ing weeks, but soon I felt I could manage on my own. Alas! We seem to feel He will see us through in some tragedy, but what about everyday annoyances, d e c i s i o n s , misunder standings, and problems? I needed Christ. I lost my patience with those taking care of me. I complained about the food or about the way the hos pital was run. I missed opportunities to witness because I was too con cerned about myself. Only until I brought our Saviour to live right be side me did I receive His promise of the peace that passeth all understand ing. We can do all things through Christ if we will but let Him (Phil. 4:13.) I can’t depend on past experiences to help me day by day. The incident of our oldest daughter losing her left eye from a sling shot accident three years ago made me realize anew that I needed to be understanding what the will of the Lord is for me now — this moment. And then give thanks for all things (Eph. 5:17,20.) Sin and temptation are all around us, and we face them constantly. How can we hope to cope with them by ourselves? I have found, only as I am conscious of His presence, can He bridle my tongue, overcome self-pity, eliminate hurt feelings, curb vanity, love the unlovely, and conquer sin. Being an invalid, I face various problems, but it is much harder to live daily in the “little things” for Christ than to be a witness in my experiences. It takes a mature Chris tian to show' the fruit of the Spirit at all times. YOU and I can be a real testimony by living Christ. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord” (Zech. 4:6.)

Mrs. Doris Gould "The incident of our oldest daughter losing her left eye from a sling shot acci dent made me realize I needed to give thanks for all things." u r Lord is a wonderful Lord! He proves it each day by His faith fulness. Do you believe it? Many times we read Bible verses such as: “Rejoice in the Lord alway’ (Phil. 4:4) or “My God shall supply all your need” (Phil. 4:19.) We say, “Amen” ! But, wait, have you found that to be true? Has He supplied your need of faithfulness? Have you found the Lord an answer to all your daily problem^? Can we rejoice when cir cumstances seem to be against us? I would like to tell you why I know we can. The year I spent in the hospital because of polio brought great anxi ety about the future of myself and my family. What future did I have? What kind of a mother could I be? How could I be a help as a minister’s wife and work along side my husband in spreading the gospel? Many verses that I had memorized over the years were brought to mind. “Casting all your care upon Him for He careth for you” (I Pet. 5:7.) It was easy for me to quote familiar verses, but what about applying them to this experi ence? We seem to have a “form of godliness, but deny the power there of” (II Tim. 3:5.) We put Christ in a special comer and forget that He is with us! Christ belongs with us moment by moment, but I had put Him up on a shelf to bring down when death was near. The Lord was O
