What Is It? Q. W hat is a schizophrenic? Is there more than one kind? A . A schizophrenic is one who suf fers from schizophrenia, a major psychotic disorder. This mental ill ness is characterized by emotional blunting and distortion, disturb ances in thought processes and a withdrawal from reality. There are several classifications such as latent, simple, hebephrenic, catatonic, paranoid and others not classified. Shall We Adopt? Q. We have a four-month-old girl from a local adoption agency whom we would like to adopt. However, when we talk to them about adopt ing her, they discourage us, saying that they are not sure that her de velopment is normal. Naturally my wife and I have be come very attached to her and we feel that we would like to take a chance on her being normal and healthy. Is this unwise? Can they tell at such a young age whether a child is actually developing norm ally? A . You would be very unwise to adopt the child if the agency has said her development may not be normal. Undoubtedly the agency has sound medical and psychologi cal evidence which you do not have. The child may have inherited low mentality. On the other hand, she may have sustained a brain in jury at birth or shortly afterward. In fact, there are a number of possible causes. Not long ago I worked with a man and wife who adopted a child against the advice of an adoption agency. They had kept the child awhile and loved it so much that they “didn’t care if it did have something wrong with it.” But when the child was six or seven years of age they realized that she

was seriously handicapped, both mentally and physically. Doctor bills mounted. The child failed at school. The parents worried much about the child. Finally they had to have the little girl institution alized. A child that is normal can be a source of real disappointment, and in addition costs a family an untold amount. But the most disappoint ing fact is that if the child is serious ly handicapped, most homes are not equipped to meet his needs. Con sequently, in time he must be put in a special hospital or school. You have asked about tests to de termine normal development. Yes, even at four months of age there are many evidences of normal or abnormal development. These evi dences are intellectual, physical and emotional. A properly trained psy chologist can determine fairly ac curately whether a young child’s development is normal. May I suggest that you wait a little longer. Time will give you the evidence you need. Rationalization Q. What is meant by rationalization and how is it supposed to work? A . Rationalization is an ego (a per son’s conception of himself) defense mechanism. By rationalization a person achieves some measure of in sulation or protection from emotion al hurt by cutting off or distorting the emotional charge which norm ally accompanies unpleasant situa tions. Here’s an example. Helen is a lady in the church choir who thinks
