LTL Linehaul Operations Team Keeps Us Moving
Commonly referred to as Central Services, LTL Linehaul Operations has the important role of dispatching 800 driving associates with about 1,200 dispatches that travel almost 500,000 miles every day. It all adds up to 19,000 daily shipments that are delivered with better than 95% on-time service.

A ‘HEALING ROAD FOR ME’ OKC Associate Follows In Late Husband’s Footsteps As City Driver Before his unexpected passing in 2020, Tony Ray was very fond of the Averitt team, and that certainly made an impression on his wife, SIERRA RAY . Tony had come to our Oklahoma City team as a dock associate following the closure of his previous employer. He completed our Dock-To-Driver Training Program , becoming a CDL-A qualified associate and eventually a city driver. “He absolutely loved it,” Sierra recalls. “It was his favorite job and favorite place to ever be employed.” Perhaps in part because of Tony’s experience, Sierra was also in the process of getting hired as a part-time office associate in September 2020. "I had spoken to (Service Center Director) WAYNE BAKER on a Monday,” Sierra says, “then my husband passed away that Thursday. We had been together for 30 years. Wayne told me to take however much time I needed, and they would hold down the fort.” UP TO THE TASK That time allowed Sierra and her family to grieve Tony. Once she joined our team, Sierra quickly learned the ropes. “She worked in a combined role,” Wayne explains, “working the dock but also with admin responsibilities such as driver check-in, imaging bills of lading and delivery receipts, along with several other tasks. She was a very quick learner and always took pride in doing exceptional work with whatever task she was given.” STEERING TOWARD A NEW OPPORTUNITY Needing some extra work, Sierra moved into an available full-time overnight appointments position, a role in which she stayed for about a year. At the same time, she had the desire to get in the driver’s seat. “It was kind of scary to me,” Sierra admits. “But I remember my husband saying something when he got his CDL and how much he loved his job. He said, ‘You ought to get your CDL. I know you could do it. You would be good at it.’ I kept remembering him saying that, so I thought, ‘I might as well try. Averitt gives you the opportunity. They teach you and train you, so I’ll see if I can do it.’” Following in Tony’s footsteps, Sierra completed our Dock-To-Driver Training Program. And she passed the driving test on her first try. “She is one of only two I’ve had in Oklahoma City who have done that,” Wayne says proudly. Sierra became a CDL-A qualified associate in March, and soon after, a city role became available. She applied for and earned the position, and she’s thrilled with where the journey has taken her. “Averitt means more to me than a lot of people realize,” Sierra says. “Everybody here also worked with my husband. I had the same trainer. It’s been a great healing road for me. I feel like everyone here is really pulling for me and encouraging me. They’ve been so helpful. And I feel like my husband would be really, really proud of me right now.”
Oklahoma City associate SIERRA RAY passed her driving test on her first try, and she recently moved into a city driving role.
‘EVERYTHING HAS WORKED OUT’ Sierra also credits her faith for how her story has unfolded. “In the midst of the tragedy, everything has been so great with Averitt,” she says. “I couldn’t have asked for more. I can look back on everything and see God putting my feet on a path. The whole story is astounding. I’m still in shock about everything. It’s sentimental and emotional, but it’s also amazing how everything has worked out. I wouldn’t want to work for anyone else.” READY TO GROW WITH AVERITT? Family Connections Help Dedicated Associate Find People Like You ‘IT’S JUST A GOOD PLACE’ When SONYA DEGRAFFENRIED came to Averitt in 2019, she knew she had found the place she wanted to make her career. And based on the positive experience she’s had, Sonya has been very active in referring People Like You. So much so that at least four of her referrals have been hired. “I always admired the red trucks,” Sonya recalls with a laugh. “When I became a truck driver, it fascinated me that a company was right there. I could drive for the Mercedes account this close to home, and I didn’t have to go over the road and be gone away from home a long time.” Sonya is glad she made the decision to come to Averitt more than five years ago. “I love my job. I enjoy working at Averitt,” she says. “It’s a good place for other people. It’s got wonderful benefits. The leaders are nice people. I think Averitt is concerned about its associates. To me, it’s just a good place. I wouldn’t leave Averitt intentionally to work somewhere else for anything in the world.” LISTENING TO FAMILY As the mother of eight children, Sonya has lots of connections to people who are looking for advice on where to find a career home. And I talk with them about their past work history. Because I wouldn’t refer anyone to Averitt that I wouldn’t feel comfortable with myself.” In addition to her own intuition, Sonya gets feedback from her children about their friends who want to come to Averitt. “I think I’ve raised a good brood of children, and if they aren’t comfortable with a person, they will tell me, ‘Mom, don’t mess with them,’” Sonya says. “So I take my kids’ word. And so far, I haven’t been let down with anyone I’ve referred to Averitt.” Thank you, Sonya, for finding people who are a good fit for our unique culture. ONGOING COMMITMENT
Environmental Responsibility Part Of Our Continuing Journey
We’re proud to do our part to protect and preserve the natural resources we all depend on, and we’re committed to being good stewards of the environment. That dedication includes embracing new innovations and technologies, evaluating our supply chains to eliminate waste and pollutants, and taking measurable steps toward a sustainable future. We do all this and more because it helps ensure a healthy, hopeful future for our associates, our customers, our communities and our planet. A SMART PARTNERSHIP SmartWay is a program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency that empowers companies to make informed decisions that enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions throughout their supply chains. We recently celebrated 20 years as a SmartWay founding member, and through that relationship we’ve achieved several important milestones:
MAKING A MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE We’ve also incorporated numerous practices throughout our network that make a measurable difference. • Introducing electric forklifts to all facilities • Saving 2.84 million gallons of fuel annually using auxiliary power units • Replacing existing lighting with more efficient LED solutions • Recycling close to 100,000 gallons of oil • Repairing and repurposing close to 30,000 tires Steps like those are just the beginning of our commitment to making our future a cleaner one. To see more information about how we aim to be good stewards of the natural resources we enjoy, visit Averitt.com/Green . T m
• A 36% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions • An 84% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions • A savings of 5.4 million gallons of diesel fuel

Including a matching donation from the company, last year’s event raised a record $25,000 for the scholarship! Scott served as our Vice President of Corporate Services until his passing in June 2012. Honoring his wishes, the Wolf family set up a scholarship fund in Scott’s name in 2013. Since that time, close to 100 students across more than a dozen states have been able to further their college education and continue Scott’s legacy of giving back to his Averitt family. Lots of associates look forward to the annual Scott Wolf Memorial Golf Open, and this year’s event is scheduled for Aug. 31 at Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle Golf Club in Cookeville!
Sign-up for the Scott Wolf Memorial Golf Open will begin July 15. The tournament will feature 18 holes of golf, breakfast, lunch, a goody bag, entrance into prize drawings, and a putting contest that raises money for the scholarship. ULINE + AVERITT = LASTING PARTNERSHIP
Largest LTL Account A Key To Our Success
For a prime example of how our service helps us add more bills and build density throughout our network,
look no further than Uline, a Wisconsin-based distributor of shipping, industrial and packaging materials. Uline is our largest LTL account, and it’s the result of proven solutions over the last 14 years. What started as a few hundred bills a day has grown into rock- solid relationships at four locations – Atlanta East, Dallas, Fort Myers and Milwaukee – that positively impact the rest of our network. “We came in and started earning opportunities,” recalls Vice President of MIKE WISE
these visits, Uline’s leadership observes how their trailers look once they arrive from Uline’s warehouses so they can identify best loading practices. “They get a chance to see if there are better ways they could have handled the freight while loading it into the trailers,” Gary says. “They watch us process it and put it on our outbound trailers. That allows them to look at better ways to use dunnage from their facility to here, or better stacking methods or bracing methods.” Gary adds, “I think that’s pretty cool because no other carrier gets the opportunity to spend time looking at quality, so obviously they appreciate the quality of work that we provide them.” CHAMPIONSHIP MENTALITY We’re also forward-thinking when it comes to how we can improve our service. In 2019, a meeting with Uline’s leadership led to the creation of our Uline Champion Program, through which we provide dedicated customer service and administrative associates who handle daily shipments and manage potential opportunities. Keven specifically highlighted the contributions of JANICE FLOYD, TRICA CESSNA, JULIE WEST, AMBER ADAMS, DONNA AGEE, KATIE CANTRELL, KELLSEY NELSON and HALIE TAYES . “They are phenomenal,” Keven says. “They are on a problem before we even know there is one. They stay on top of every shipment.” PRIMED FOR GROWTH Though our Uline service mostly consists of LTL, we’ve also gained some Truckload business, and we recently earned the opportunity to handle Dedicated switching in Dallas. “Our relationship with Uline is always evolving,” Mike says, “and it’s not just based on our performance today. It's our ability to overcome challenges and opportunities, because those are going to happen. Everybody in our network owns the relationship in some form or fashion, whether it’s at each service center or at the corporate level. And our ability to communicate with our customers is a huge part of our success. I think that has helped us become a premier provider for them.” T m Uline recently gave an Exceptional Performance award to our Milwaukee service center, presenting it to Service Center Director KEVEN MCKELLY (left). It was one of three Exceptional Performance awards we earned this year alone.
Corporate Business Development MIKE WISE . “It literally became like a performance-based incentive. The better we performed, the more opportunities they kept offering us. We held true to our standards. We did exactly what we told them we would do, and it just started growing from there.” It's a partnership that makes us all stronger, providing bills at many more service centers than the
GARY TAYLOR
four main locations. “Uline out of Milwaukee is about 46% of our outbound,” explains Milwaukee Service Center Director KEVEN MCKELLY . “And our outbound Uline shipments are Louisville’s and St. Louis’ biggest inbound accounts.” “Uline loves Averitt,” Keven adds. “They said if everybody did things like we did, it would be a lot easier on them.” Atlanta East Service Center Director GARY TAYLOR – whose facility handles about 2,500 Uline bills a month – says a common culture also plays a role. “Uline has a focus on professionalism, image and culture that is similar to our own," he says. "It's what sets them apart from their competitors, while also strengthening the relationship we have with them.” REAPING THE AWARDS If strong relationships are built on communication, Uline has also let us know exactly how it feels in the form of customer awards. All four service centers have been named as “Exceptional Performance” winners through the years, including three this past year alone. “The success of Uline takes a village,” Mike says. “It’s not based on one person. It's the entire team’s relationship. Everybody knows Uline and knows what the expectations are. That’s why we perform at such a high level.” A UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP Uline is forward-thinking when it comes to its relationship with our team. One way it shows that is through quarterly visits to Atlanta East. During

JEREMY WARD – Raleigh We recently had a shipment that was messed up, so Jeremy had to wait and was very patient. He also helped us get our stuff straightened out, and he was super nice and more than helpful. Most drivers would not offer to help like he did. Ladonna, CES – Knightdale, NC STORM WAGNER – Corporate I have to take a moment to give Storm a big shoutout of appreciation for her peppy and positive assistance. I have a customer who uses Averitt for delivery to Sysco and I had some questions on detention. She had some questions herself and had to use her resources to find the answers. She explained it all to me, making sense of everything and saving the day. Danielle, Worldwide Express – Dallas, TX
JAMES BELL – Atlanta East James Bell is our regular driver, and he is phenomenal! James has helped us out too many times to count. He is always friendly, pleasant and polite. But more importantly, he is one of the most dependable drivers that we have ever dealt with, and we’ve been working with truck drivers for a long time.
