Letter from the President Introduction to our company

2023 has been a year in which we continued to build our strong foundations to improve and expand our operations, while keeping our constant commitment to sustainability and regenerative practices. We worked across our four priority areas: fostering sustainable growth by embedding our values in our company culture, diversifying product offerings and markets, emphasising sustainability to differentiate the Group's commitment, and identifying synergies across businesses to optimise value capture and retention. These priorities are aimed at achieving both long-term aspirations and immediate objectives, driving our group towards a more sustainable and regenerative future while capitalising on its scale, integration, and resources. Selenis believes that the path towards a greener and a waste-free future is only possible by navigating along three roads: recycling, recyclability and bio-based. This is why the preceding year marked the beginning of several strategic partnerships within the sustainability ecosystem. We successfully incorporated a textile-to- textile consortium, enabling us to accelerate our chemical recycling technology whilst tackling a severe issue on the today’s world; certified the recyclability of our resins, continuing to pave our way into a closed loop economy; partnered and deployed several projects within the bio- based sphere, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and connecting the entire plastic value chain. As part of our growth and diversification strategy, in 2023 Selenis launched a new medical brand for the healthcare industry: Selcare™. We worked together with suppliers, technical teams and clients in developing our proposition to support healthcare customers looking for more sustainable alternatives, while ensuring the highest standards on technical and regulatory compliance.

Circularity, bio-materials, renewable energy, and energy efficiency are part of our key strategies towards our goals of reduction of our carbon footprint. To reinforce our decarbonisation plans, we adhered to the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), as a complement to our ongoing calculation of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of all our products. These initiatives are part of our commitment to transparency and reduction of carbon footprint. Another important milestone in 2023 was the certification of our production facility in Portugal under ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This achievement underscores our dedication to upholding the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental responsibility. Looking ahead, our focus remains on driving regenerative management practices, fostering innovation, and strengthening partnerships to create lasting positive impacts. We are actively engaged in initiatives such as the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, demonstrating our commitment to collaborative solutions for tackling plastic pollution. In conclusion, I want to express my gratitude to our employees, customers, partners, and other stakeholders for their unwavering support and dedication to our sustainability journey. Together, we will continue to lead the way towards a more sustainable and regenerative future. Manuel Matos Gil Group President

In line with our vision to decrease the industry’s dependency on virgin fossil materials and to drive towards a net zero circular economy, Selenis has developed bio-based resins, increasing our portfolio of environmentally friendly resins. These initiatives fortify Selenis presence in the ecosystem as an innovative and trailblazing actor towards a more sustainable future. Hence, and proudly, Selenis is certified by Recyclass, APR, ISCC PLUS and EcoVadis. Selenis is devoted to playing a role in society’s collective response to the challenges we face, by jointly working across the value chain to create tangible solutions.

Italy The industrial site in Italy is strategically located in northern Italy, a very important logistics position to serve the most sophisticated market for the copolyester industry. The facility has a flexible configuration for the processing multiple formulations, resulting in the production of very special products that fit customers’ needs and provide different options to satisfy the demands and requirements of the final user.

Climate change and its business implications

The financial implications of the current context, alongside the overarching challenges posed by climate change, have significant ramifications for our company's operations and bottom line. Firstly, within the realm of plastic waste management and sustainability initiatives, there are both costs and potential savings to consider. Investments in research and development to mitigate microplastic pollution can incur substantial expenses initially. Moreover, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations regarding plastic waste and environmental standards demands financial resources for adaptation and implementation. Furthermore, the volatility in energy prices, aggravated by both climate change impacts and geopolitical tensions, poses a direct financial risk to our company. Fluctuating energy prices can significantly impact production costs, particularly considering our reliance on energy-intensive processes. Additionally, the need to invest in energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources to mitigate climate change- related risks further adds to our financial burden. Climate change itself presents an array of financial challenges. From the potential for increased operational costs due to extreme weather events, such as higher temperatures necessitating additional cooling expenses, to the risks associated with supply chain disruptions caused by climate- related disasters, the financial impacts are multifaceted. Moreover, as governments worldwide implement policies to combat climate change, such as carbon taxes or emissions trading schemes, our company may face additional financial burdens. However, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for financial resilience and growth. By proactively addressing sustainability concerns and embracing innovative solutions, we can not only mitigate risks but also unlock new revenue streams. Investments in sustainable innovations, such as recycling technologies or renewable energy generation, not only align with our company's values but also have the potential to reduce long-term costs and enhance competitiveness in a changing market landscape.

Sustainability topics Regenerative management To identify the main sustainability topics of our company, we consulted with our stakeholders of previous years through a survey among employees and suppliers, and we also considered the insight of our commercial team, the talks we conduct with our clients, and the outcomes from associations meetings and industry forums. This year, in line with our commitment to robust sustainability reporting, we have adopted a double materiality approach. This approach not only considers the impacts of our activities on the external environment but also evaluates the extent to which external environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors may impact our business operations and long-term sustainability. The assessment was completed with other issues and challenges that we deem relevant to our sustainability strategy. The final list of relevant topics is depicted in the following materiality graphic, and it is classified according to our 5 sustainability pillars. They represent our company’s most significant impacts on the economy, environment, and people, including impacts on human rights. The identified material topics are thoroughly addressed throughout the entirety of the report, appearing in various sections. Given the interconnected nature of sustainability issues, many of these topics are cross-cutting and may reappear in different sections. This approach ensures comprehensive coverage and allows for a holistic understanding of our sustainability efforts and their impact across different aspects of our operations and engagements.

In 2023 Selenis reinforced our commitment to sustainability through our recent adhesion to the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty, bringing together businesses and financial institutions committed to supporting the development of an ambitious, effective, and legally-binding UN Treaty to end plastic waste. Selenis shares the Coalition’s vision of a circular economy in which plastic never becomes waste or pollution, and the value of products and materials is retained in the economy. A comprehensive circular economy approach can address the root causes of plastic pollution and contribute to the global efforts to combat the climate and biodiversity crisis, while delivering economic, environmental, and social benefits. We are committed to advocating for ambitious policy recommendations that prioritise reduction, circulation, and prevention of plastic pollution. With over 200 endorsers, the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty presents a unique opportunity for governments, businesses, and stakeholders worldwide to collaborate on effective solutions to address the challenges posed by plastic pollution. Selenis believes it’s our responsibility to be part of the solution to end plastic waste, and we want to do our part in this pivotal moment in the history of plastics, emphasising the urgent need for coordinated action to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. The coalition is dedicated to engaging with treaty negotiators, developing clear policy recommendations, and building confidence in the business community regarding the benefits of an effective treaty. It is a call upon all stakeholders to join in the collective effort to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy where plastic never becomes waste or pollution. Selenis is a proud endorser of the Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty

Partnerships and associations The Association of Plastic Recyclers

Selenis is a proud member of APR, an international non-profit focused exclusively on improving recycling for plastics. APR’s tools & resources help us design packaging that can be recycled, and support innovations that overcome existing recycling challenges. In 2023 our Weezen® CE resins received formal recognition for meeting the highest criteria for recyclability according to the APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability.

As a member of APR Selenis can influence the recycling of PET by helping enact changes that strengthen and improve the existing recycling system, and participate in discussions about recycling guidelines, programs and priorities. Our membership also expands our insight on issues affecting the industry, such as developments in recycling technologies and recyclable products, and legislative updates from policy experts.

Committed to the Plastics Pact targets towards a circular economy

Selenis has been at the forefront of joint efforts in implementing solutions towards a circular economy, exemplified by our Group’s active participation in the Plastics Pact established by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. As a founding member of both the Portuguese Plastics Pact and the US Plastics Pact, we have demonstrated our commitment to driving the transition towards a circular economy for plastics.

Our Group is a proud member of the U.S. Plastics Pact, working to shape a circular future for plastic packaging. As an Activator, we help the Pact tackle difficult issues and make recommendations for actions we can take now and in the future. The U.S. Plastics Pact’s Roadmap to 2025 has been used by brand owners, NGOs and Government bodies to inform and shape policy by providing a cross functional, cross industry approach to the challenges and opportunities plastic packaging represents. In 2023 our sister company Evertis participated in the first ever U.S. Plastics Pact Action Summit in New Orleans to accelerate progress toward existing goals and begin work to create a roadmap beyond 2025 to help define the role of the US Plastics Pact in the future. We also dove deeper into the Pact’s work through participation in the Film and Flexibles workstream, an area in need of enhanced support due to the more limited recycling opportunities that exist today. The U.S. Plastics Pact has established itself as an action- oriented voice of the industry in the challenging world of plastics circularity.

Our Group strongly supports the Plastics Pact´s mission of bringing together expertise and resources across the entire plastics value chain. We believe that by sharing best practices, challenges and reporting on our progress, businesses can learn from each other, and jointly transform the plastics system. We actively contributed to the creation and launch of the “Porquê o Plástico” (“Why Plastic”) guideline created by the Portuguese Plastics Pact. This guide serves as a comprehensive resource, explaining the meaning of implementing a circular economy for plastics, enabling a more rational, responsible, and sustainable use of plastics. This initiative aligns with our goal of promoting awareness and understanding of the importance of a circular economy for plastics. Through our participation in the Plastics Pacts, we continue to lead by example in the journey towards a more sustainable future. We remain dedicated to driving positive change, fostering innovation, and collaborating with stakeholders to create lasting solutions to the challenges of plastic pollution.
