Selenis’ sustainability strategy in innovation and product development is exemplified by our pursuit of bio-based materials, fostering a culture of improvement and pioneer solutions. In 2023, the total world production volume of bio-based polymers was 4.4 million tonnes, which is 1% of the total volume of fossil-based polymers. The annual growth of bio-based polymers is 17%, significantly higher than the overall growth of polymers (2–3%) – this is expected to continue until 2028. Bio-based materials Innovation
The most important driver in 2023 were global brands adapting their strategy to transition polymers, plastics, and chemicals industry to become climate-friendly and part of the circular economy, thus offering customers environmentally friendly alternatives to petrochemical products. Hence, brands are expanding their portfolio to include solutions developed utilising renewable carbon, CO₂, recycling, and biomass, in addition to fossil-based sources, thereby increasing the demand for bio-based and biodegradable polymers.
