Bio-MEG Innovation

UPM BIOCHEMICALS

Glycols are a mainstay in chemistry. An everyday product, proven and tested in countless end-use applications for more than 95 years. The main problem with today’s glycols is that they are made from fossil raw materials, mainly oil.

UPM produces more sustainable, renewable MEG and MPG made from locally sourced and invariably certified wood in Germany. UPM extracts sugars from wood, through enzymatic hydrolysis and leverages said ingredient to produce Bio-MEG. The figure below perfectly depicts UPM’s Bio-MEG supply chain.

100% of the wood used to produce UPM renewable biochemicals in the UPM biorefinery in Leuna, Germany, is either FSC®- or PEFC™ certified and taken from forests where biodiversity and natural ecosystems are preserved. All wood is fully traceable, controlled, and covered by a verified third- party chain of custody.
