Into the future - Selenis 2023 Sustainability Report

Training and professional development Employee wellbeing and development

The attainment of the ISO 45001 certification by Selenis represents a significant step forward in our sustainability journey. By integrating health and safety standards with our regenerative strategy and investing in the training and professional development of our employees, we are poised to drive positive change and create a more sustainable future. At Selenis, we are committed to not only meeting but exceeding the highest standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility. This commitment is reflected in our recent achievement of ISO 45001 certification, which underpins our dedication to occupational health and safety. However, our vision extends beyond mere compliance; it encompasses a regenerative approach that fosters resilience and promotes positive impacts on our employees. Central to this approach is our investment in the training and professional development of our workforce, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to drive sustainable practices forward.

Comparing this year’s data to the previous period, our training hours per employee have risen from 32 to 33 hours. 49% of our training activities are directly related to operations. This statistic not only underscores the importance we place on operational efficiency but also reflects our strategic emphasis on equipping our workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive excellence in this critical area. Our goal is to continuously refine and optimise our operational processes to maximise efficiency and enhance overall productivity. We are equally dedicated to prioritising another vital aspect of our organisational framework: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). OHS training comprises a significant portion of our training curriculum, emerging as the second most important training content after operations.

In 2023, we initiated our inaugural Internship program, beginning with a Chemical Masters Engineering candidate from Sorbonne University, Elissar Al Mardini. Over the course of 5 months, Elissar immersed herself in various facets of the Selenis business. Her journey commenced with grasping our customers’ evolving product requirements through direct interactions, followed by adeptly communicating these needs to our Product Development team at our plant in Italy. Subsequently, Elissar collaborated with them at the Pilot Plant to formulate trial quantities for in-house testing and customer evaluation. This iterative process culminated in scaling up production for commercial purposes. This hands-on experience provided Elissar with invaluable insights into how Selenis delivers bespoke polyester resin solutions to meet our customers’ expressed needs, thereby illuminating potential career pathways in the field of Chemical Engineering.

“My internship with Selenis was designed to offer me a comprehensive understanding of the company and facilitated my personal growth in numerous ways. Throughout the internship, I gained insights into the entire product development process: from conceptualizing parameters to address customer needs, to researching and formulating new formulas, and ultimately, engaging directly with customers. This experience enriched my knowledge of the PET and PETG domain and integrated me into Selenis’ mission of contributing to the circular economy.”
