Pioneering environmental protection and addressing the microplastic challenge Environment

Portugal Evertis Ibérica’s pledge to

Brazil Evertis Brasil has made significant strides towards achieving the 4 th star of Operation Clean Sweep®. We have focused on enhancing our working facilities and employee training to minimise plastic pellet loss during production, handling, and transportation processes. Several improvements have been implemented as part of the OCS programme. Questionnaires were sent to suppliers and transporters to raise awareness, and periodic training sessions were conducted for employees and third parties to reinforce best practices. A new warehouse of approximately 2000m² is under construction to address space limitations and prevent losses. Furthermore, additional PET silos have been acquired to improve the storage of raw materials, further reducing the risk of spillage. These efforts have resulted in tangible outcome: raw material losses have reduced by almost 40% from 2022 to 2023.

Mexico Evertis México is implementing improvements to reduce pellet loss in the warehouse and throughout the entire process from raw material reception to its usage. In 2023 additional silos were installed to store raw materials, further reducing pellet losses during raw material reception. Furthermore, there were training sessions for the staff on waste separation. During these sessions, the importance of separating waste according to its category and ensuring proper disposal was explained to the personnel.

In recent years, the presence of microplastics in our environment has emerged as a critical global concern, representing one of the most pressing challenges of our time. These tiny plastic particles, measuring less than five millimetres in size, are ubiquitous in our oceans, freshwater systems, soil, and even the air we breathe. As we navigate the microplastics challenge, it becomes evident that addressing this issue requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach. Our industry must develop innovative solutions aimed at mitigating microplastic pollution.

Operation Clean Sweep® began with our commitment to zero-loss processes and the acquisition of equipment for enhanced cleaning. Progress continued with a detailed assessment of facility needs and an evaluation of capabilities. Equipment upgrades to bolster cleaning efficiency were procured, while employee training on procedures was initiated. Facilities were scheduled for upgrades, and internal communication efforts identified areas for improvement. A successful webinar heightened awareness, and a risk assessment defined subsequent actions. Throughout, our commitment to Operation Clean Sweep® Evertis has remained dedicated to efficiency and accountability, with a steadfast focus on achieving zero losses.

Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS) is a global initiative led by the plastics industry to prevent plastic pellet, flake, and powder loss and ensure proper containment, thus reducing the potential for microplastic pollution in our waterways and environment. All Evertis production sites have pledged our dedication to environmental stewardship by becoming a member of the OCS program and implementing the OCS Pledge’s foundational strategies to prevent and mitigate resin loss. This step reinforces our commitment to preventing plastic spillages into the environment, ensuring a cleaner and healthier planet for generations to come. Communication has played a vital role in disseminating information and fostering a culture of accountability. Visual media, digital platforms like LinkedIn, and integrated training sessions have reached a wide audience, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and engaged in the OCS programme.
