CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

The Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023 suggests that technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, will be a key driver in the world of work in whatever sphere of endeavour in which you will be involved in the future. In addition to technological literacy, several skills and competencies are important as you go forth. These include analytical and creative thinking which are among the characteristics of the ideal UWI graduate. Others are resilience, flexibility, agility, motivation, self-awareness, curiosity, lifelong learning, dependability, and attention to detail. Attitudes to work are also important for survival, in particular empathy and active listening. World Economic Underpinning your education and experiences is a spirit of regionality that is the foundation of our University. I urge you to keep it firm in your hearts and minds as you go forward. This year, The UWI celebrates 75 years of service to the region and you – our graduates – are our most significant contribution to development at the national, regional and global levels. Today, we celebrate your achievements and the promise of even greater things to come. We look forward to your continued involvement with this noble institution which has nurtured so many and has placed you on a path to success. Mentor a student, contribute to scholarships and bursaries, return as adjunct or full-time lecturers, advocate for The UWI in your professional networks! We wish you the very best as you continue on your chosen paths and hope that you will remain engaged with your alma mater.

My heartiest congratulations to each member of the graduating class of 2023! Your graduation marks the end of one journey and the start of another. As you reflect on the journey to this day, you will also be considering the future. For the past three years our lives have been influenced by a combination of health, geopolitical and economic factors. The COVID-19 pandemic caused us to revisit how we organise our daily living, the Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in supply chain disruptions that made us realise how inter-connected we are in the global space, and although the global recession that was being hinted at last year has not materialised, we are dealing with increasing inflation that also impacts our daily lives. Your programmes of study have prepared you intellectually, and I hope that all you have experienced at The UWI during these years – co-curricular activities and other student engagement and enrichment programmes – have helped to inculcate the skills and competencies that you will need to be resilient and to effectively engage in the world beyond The UWI.

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE

As you reflect on your journey to this day, I share with you a quote from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu – You stand out in the crowd only because you have these many, many carrying you on their shoulders. For many of you, this was a shared journey. Your batch mates, parents, spouses, children, have been there with you, every step of the way. So have your lecturers, the administrators and technical teams at the University. All of us have had to adapt to the changes in modus operandi. I ask that you find ways to say thank you to those who have supported you through this journey. Information and communication technologies have transformed our world in the past few decades. The COVID-19 pandemic forced our hand in 2020 and technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, cloud technology, and the internet of things are now infused in our daily lives. Traditional university life usually affords students opportunities to engage with counterparts from other countries and cultures. It is my fervent hope that even with online studies, you were still able to form friendships that withstood the test of group work and assignments. That networking and some of those friendships may last beyond your academic careers and into your professional lives. Continue to nurture those relationships. As you reflect on the journey you have completed and on what lies ahead, please consider how you can have a positive influence in all that you do in the future. In addition to your professional pursuits, mentor a student, contribute towards scholarships for bright but financially challenged students, advocate for your University in numerous fora, and stay in touch with us through the various social networking facilities that have been set up for this purpose. My very best as you continue on your chosen paths.

My heartiest congratulations to the graduating class of 2023! Three years ago, in October and November 2020, the world was in “wait and see” mode. Some of you were already enrolled in programmes at The UWI. That year, some of you took a leap of faith and entered The UWI to begin programmes at undergraduate or graduate levels, not knowing what the COVID-19 pandemic had in store for the world. And what a fascinating journey it has been for all of us! The UWI, now your alma mater was able to pivot easily to emergency, remote teaching in 2020. This was because the Open Campus, now the Global Campus had the capacity to conduct training in online teaching methods for sister campuses. This sharing of expertise reflects what we call our “One UWI” philosophy and underpins all that we do. Even though we delivered programmes in blended and in some cases almost full face-to-face mode in the 2022 academic year, it is possible that some of you may have never been on one of the campuses. Whatever your experience has been, this graduating class, like those of 2020, 2021, and 2022, has a special place in the unfolding history of this institution. Your success is our success and your University is grateful to you for staying the course and demonstrating that in the face of challenges, by working together, we can achieve our goals.

Blessings!

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles Vice-Chancellor

CAMPUS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The effects of global warming are becoming increasingly obvious and it seems that everyday new highs in temperatures across the globe are being recorded. The UWI has played a major role as Caribbean nations have advocated for concerted global action to keep global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius and to provide the financing necessary for our vulnerable states to adapt to and mitigate the harmful effects from global warming. As you graduate from our academy I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and become the next generation of globally impactful climate advocates from the Caribbean. I implore you to develop the technological solutions as our nations seek to adapt to climate change. The Caribbean region and the wider world face an epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases as the quality and quantity of life is adversely affected by diabetes, hypertension, cancer and other such diseases. The epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases is highly correlated with the rise of sedentary lifestyles and a global food system that produces and distributes unhealthy foods. As you graduate from our academy I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and become the next generation of globally impactful health and wellness advocates from the Caribbean. I implore you to lead the way in food security for the Caribbean and easy access to healthful foods.

I take this opportunity to offer, on behalf of myself and the team at Five Islands Campus, heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2023, the fourth graduating class of the campus and the class graduating in the 75 th year of our beloved university’s existence. We want to thank you for entrusting us with the task of shaping such a critical phase in your development. We congratulate you on your efforts and sacrifices and also extend congratulations to your family and support system. As you graduate from our academy, the world appears to be at a major tipping point as humankind confronts the Triple C Crisis comprising of the existential threat of Climate Change, an epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases, an explosion of gun-related Crime in the Caribbean at the dawn of the 5 th Industrial Revolution powered by advances in Artificial Intelligence.

CAMPUS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The last time the world was at such a tipping point was the first Industrial Revolution which led to remarkable advances in human well-being, but it also led to the “Great Divergence” as there was a sharp divergence in living standards between nations and regions that embraced that revolution and those that did not. The Caribbean cannot afford to be victims of a “Great Divergence” consequent to the fifth Industrial Revolution. The region and the world are depending on you graduands to lead the Caribbean in this transition. Again, warmest congratulations to the class of 2023. You can now take your place as proud UWI Pelicans; distinguished “Frigates” ready to serve your country and the wider Caribbean region. Graduating class of 2023, you are only taking leave from the lecture theatre, the Five Islands Campus will forever be your nesting place. Graduates stand ready contribute to the Caribbean and the world confront this major tipping point in human history. There is no doubt in my mind that you will answer the call to arms.

The Caribbean region leads the world in gun related homicides. In our beautiful tropical paradise young men shoot each other to death with impunity daily and whole communities are held to ransom by gunmen. As you graduate from our academy I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and become the next generation of globally impactful advocates from the Caribbean for peace and justice. I implore you to lead the way in developing effective, innovative, just and equitable solutions to this crime gun related crime crisis that bedevils the region. In the second decade of the 21 st century humankind is on the cusp of the 5 th Industrial Revolution led by the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence. “During the next decade we’re going to see smarts put into everything,” said Ed Lazowska, a computer scientist at the University of Washington who is a specialist in Big Data. “Smart homes, smart cars, smart health, smart robots, smart science, smart crowds and smart computer-human interactions.” The first Industrial Revolution freed humankind from the limits of muscle and animal power. The fifth Industrial Revolution offers the opportunity to free us from the limits of our mental capacities. As you graduate from our academy, I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and lead the way to ensure that the Caribbean is able to capitalize on the opportunities and manage the threats arising from this fifth Industrial Revolution.

Born and raised in the Point area in St. John’s, Antigua, Sir Leroy MacLean Emanuel ‘King Short Shirt’, the‘Monarch’is described as a colossal of a calypsonian. He first entered the calypso arena in 1962 and, since then, has produced hundreds of quality calypsos, several for fellow calypsonians, and is known mainly for his cutting lyrical content, sweet harmony, and smooth melodious voice. King Short Shirt has won the Calypso Competition 15 times in Antigua and Barbuda and was the first to ‘three-peat’ in the annual competition 1964, 1965, and 1966. He took the Caribbean Calypso Competition crown seven times and has seven Road March Crowns under his belt. Some of his biggest hits include Tourist Leggo; Lucinda; Nobody Go Run me; Our Pledge; Lamentation; Star Black; Run Shorty Run; In Spite Of All, and so many more. He has been twice invited by the Prime Ministers of fellow CARICOM countries to their Independence celebrations: Belize in 1981, where he performed A New Beginning, a song he wrote especially for the occasion; and Saint Lucia in 2023.

Calypso may be his passion, but he has also translated his love of the craft and performing into businesses. In 1962, he opened Shorty’s Beach Bar and Shorty’s Glass Bottom Boats, followed eight years later by a record shop, A & B Record.

VALEDICTORIAN MS. KENDRA THOMAS Bachelor of Education with First Class Honours

Ms. Kendra Thomas grew up in a disciplined and loving household with her parents Lemuel (deceased) and Veronica Thomas, both avid readers. They encouraged and modelled an environment of excellence, which taught her to appreciate and value an education. This left Kendra yearning for knowledge which she keenly received in school and by reading many books. Encyclopedias allowed her to explore and discover the world through pages and words as she realised a passion for science was slowly igniting within her. At a very young age, Kendra reinforced her learning by teaching stones and her dolls at home. She was destined to be an educator. Her pursuit in education took her to the Golden Grove Primary School, the Antigua Girls’ High School (where she pursued the natural sciences), and the Antigua State College where she completed teacher training, earning her associate degree in education. Kendra’s passion for knowledge and science led to her serving as an educator for 24 years at the Golden Grove Primary School and the Green Bay Primary School. She later joined the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries as a Curriculum Support Officer for primary and secondary level science, a position she still currently holds. Kendra combined her love for education and her passion for science and technology as she worked on the National Science Fair Steering Committee for many years and as a Trainer on the Systemic Technology Integration Technology Series (STITS), a project sponsored by the Antigua and Barbuda Rotary Club. She also co-edited the “Innovative Science and Technology for the Caribbean” textbook series and was a part of the curriculum writing committee for the OECS harmonized science curriculum and the 2009 and 2019 national primary science curriculum. Kendra volunteered with the Environmental Awareness Group (EAG) on several bird censuses and training sessions. She is community- spirited and actively contributed to her community as the Deputy Chairperson

of the District Disaster Preparedness Committee, showing her commitment to safety and well-being. In addition to her academic pursuits, Kendra is a dedicated mother of two children, a role she cherishes as her most significant achievement. She excels at balancing her family responsibilities with her educational aspirations and her hobbies, reading and backyard gardening. She acclaims her family’s support as pivotal in her continual motivation to excel in all her endeavours. She lives by the golden rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” which shines through her humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Kendra Thomas, a remarkable individual whose educational journey was characterized by resilience, dedication, and leadership as she finally pursued her degree after many deferrals. Today, she is The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus’ valedictorian for 2023. She embodies of excellence with a consistent GPA of over 4.0 and the Principal’s Award for Academic Excellence - a true inspiration to her fellow graduates. Her perseverance, dedication to education, and unwavering commitment to her community perfectly reflect the spirit of The University of the West Indies.

GREETINGS FROM THE UWI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Please always remain involved with your Alma Mater whether through: the Pelican Perks Advantage Programme which allows you to get discounts at stores and businesses via your UWI Alumni Association (UWIAA) Chapter membership; by contributing stories of your achievements and innovations via the UWI Nexus and UWI Connect publications or the Global UWI Alumni Hub (uwiglobalalumnihub.com); the Soft and Life Skills Webinars; the Alumni Engagement Programme; or E-Mentorship, by sharing your knowledge and experiences with students and young graduates. Your University has celebrated its 75 th Anniversary this year. Your relationship with The UWI is extremely important to us, so please remain engaged with your Alma Mater and explore the many ways you can share your expertise with our future alumni: our students, by contacting the Campus Alumni Relations Officers or myself. Importantly, Global UWI Alumni Day 2024 will be special, and even more so, if you are participants. Therefore please plan on being involved on JUNE 26, 2024. Being a part of Generation Z, I believe that, as UWI graduates, you will help to create stable, productive Caribbean societies, and collectively work to protect our Region from challenges like climate change, global pandemics and other obstacles. As stated in the UWI Alumni Pledge, I invite you all to be “catalysts for Caribbean development and leadership.” There are UWI Pelicans all over the Caribbean, and the world, making their communities and societies better places to be, and I am confident that you will each also make your unique contributions. My warmest wishes to you all as you start your professional journeys!

Congratulations to the class of 2023! Universities produce mavericks, entrepreneurs, public and private sector professionals, educators, financiers, IT & AI specialists, health & wellness professionals, scientists, engineers, communicators, marketers, innovators and many more types of experts - who all lead each generation of their nations, and also influence and shape the futures of thousands of citizens. Class of 2023, as graduates, you represent The UWI’s richest potential and you are our greatest product! However, I must point out that you have big shoes to fill as you are entering the workforce after 75 years of UWI graduates who have already helped to build the Caribbean nations you are inheriting. However it is your time now! We trust that you will create societies and legacies that you will enjoy as you build them, and also that you will be proud to leave behind for the next generation, as you take your UWI experience and knowledge into your various professional spheres. I encourage you to look to the future with hope, purpose, vision and passion. I am honoured to salute you all and your achievements today and I do so with immense Pelican Pride. As a fellow UWI graduate, I am delighted to officially welcome you to the UWI Graduate Family and to bring you special congratulations on behalf of the wider global alumni population.

THE UNIVERSITY SONG “There is a Light” by Noel Dexter

From Caribbean Islands Guyana and Belize Was born our University Of the West Indies Proud symbol of our oneness Our strength in unity With vision clear you came along To shape our destiny

To follow after knowledge The truth to seek and find To teach us love and justice To liberate the mind

Today we see you rising A light out of the West That guides the feet of all who seek The noblest and the best

Chorus There is a light that is rising From out of the West And proud bearers of that light Are we, So we follow those whose work has brought glory to you name, Making a better world for you and for me

Now from your noble portals Your sons and daughters go, To face a world of challenges To conquer every foe, We’ll work and play together And as time marches on, We’ll ne’er forget the lesson that We let our big drums roll loud And steel pans ping, ping, pong. For you have shaped our lives so That we can truly say To you we owe our gratitude A debt we can’t repay “De whole a wi a one” U.W. I. we praise you We lift our voice in song

Repeat Chorus

This is our University of the West Indies
