HIGHLIGHTS OF DEVELOPMENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY – 2022/2023
• JMD22M in Scholarship Funding for UWI Mona Students Following AFUWI Visit The UWI Mona Campus hosted seven members of the American Foundation of The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) Board of Trustees on October 20, 2022. The visit culminated in a donation of more than JMD22 million in scholarships for UWI Mona Students. The New York-based Foundation is a charitable organisation recognised for its work in fundraising, its transformational leadership, advocacy, and facilitation of higher education among nationals in the Caribbean region. • UWI Mona Graduate David Salmon announced as the 2023 Rhodes Scholar Eleven of Jamaica’s brightest students competed for one of the oldest, and most prestigious international scholarship programmes, the Rhodes Scholarship, and on November 10, 2022, David Salmon was announced the victor. A graduate of The UWI Mona, Salmon completed his first degree in Public Policy and Management in the Faculty of Social Sciences. He is currently pursuing his graduate degree in Development Studies at the University of Cambridge after receiving the HRH Prince of Wales Scholarship. Salmon was also one of the five valedictorians in The UWI 2022 Graduating Class. • Embassy of the People’s Republic of China donates JMD5.4 million to support the Huawei ICT Lab The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Jamaica donated JMD5.4 million to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The UWI Mona Campus, to support the Huawei ICT Lab – a part of the larger Huawei ICT Talent Hub in Jamaica. The Handover Ceremony was held on December 1, 2022, at The UWI Mona, to mark the symbolic partnership. Huawei and The UWI signed an MOU in 2021 for the creation of the Huawei ICT Talent Hub in Jamaica. The partnership continues to support teaching, learning, and research using advanced ICT technologies. The Lab serves the mutual goal of transporting ICT technology and facilitating an ICT knowledge exchange pipeline for expanding Jamaica’s digital literacy landscape through teaching and research. • The UWI Mona and CHEC Sign Cooperation Agreement for Materials Testing Laboratory in St. James The University of the West Indies and China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) signed a Cooperation Agreement marking a new partnership for the construction of The Collaborative Laboratory on UWI lands at Irwin in St. James. The Agreement was inked on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. The facility will serve as the main laboratory for materials testing for the duration of the Montego Bay Perimeter Road Project (MBPRP). It will be a vehicle for realising the goals of The UWI, the Faculty of Engineering (FoE), CHEC, and the Government of Jamaica.
