HIGHLIGHTS OF DEVELOPMENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY – 2022/2023

The UWI Mona Launches Mona Moves! As part of The UWI Mona’s continued commitment to the health and wellness of our community, the Mona Campus launched MONA MOVES, which formed part of The UWI’s 75 th Anniversary Celebrations. The Launch was held on March 16, 2023. MONA MOVES seeks to create a culture of wellness on campus by providing opportunities for individuals to engage in physical activities that are fun, accessible, and inclusive. The initiative will offer a variety of activities, including fitness classes, recreational sports, and other activities.
• Scotiabank commits CDN600K in support of scholarships at The UWI
At the 14 th Annual UWI Toronto Benefit Awards held at the Ritz Carlton on April 29, 2023 Scotiabank, Lead Sponsor of the event since its inception in 2010, committed CDN600,000 to support The UWI’s scholarship programme over the next six years. The UWI Toronto Benefit Awards receives tremendous support from the Canadian corporate sector, continuing in the tradition of the long and rich relationship between The University of the West Indies and Canada.
ST. AUGUSTINE CAMPUS • Celebrating UWI at 75
The main campus at St. Augustine was bedecked with banners celebrating the 75 th anniversary of the founding of The University of the West Indies and commemorative events were well supported. An Artisan pop-up market attracted over 100 student, staff and alumni entrepreneurs; a blood drive in conjunction with the Ministry of Health collected 78 units of blood; and 39 pieces were submitted by staff for an anniversary art competition. Additionally, the anniversary was acknowledged during the anniversary celebrations of the Seismic Research Centre and a royal visit from the African continent. • New Deep-Sea Tubeworm Named After UWI Scientist Professor Judith Gobin In March 2023, a new deep-sea tubeworm species, Lamellibrachia judigobini, was named after Professor Judith Gobin, from the Faculty of Science & Technology, honouring her contributions to marine science. Discovered between 2012 to 2014 by an international scientific team, the worm can grow over 1 metre long, and inhabits deep-sea cold seeps and hydrothermal vents from Trinidad & Tobago to the Gulf of Mexico, and possibly the Kick ‘em Jenny submarine volcano near Grenada.

FFA Market Launched on Campus In March 2023, the St. Augustine Campus’ Faculty of Food & Agriculture launched their Market Place, offering a diverse range of locally sourced, sustainable products. These include UWI-branded dairy items, eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, unique items like quail, honey, and chocolate, and healthy pre-cooked meals. The Market Place promotes entrepreneurship among students and staff.
