THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES – FIVE ISLANDS CAMPUS
CEREMONIES FOR THE PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES 2023
CAMPUS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The effects of global warming are becoming increasingly obvious and it seems that everyday new highs in temperatures across the globe are being recorded. The UWI has played a major role as Caribbean nations have advocated for concerted global action to keep global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius and to provide the financing necessary for our vulnerable states to adapt to and mitigate the harmful effects from global warming. As you graduate from our academy I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and become the next generation of globally impactful climate advocates from the Caribbean. I implore you to develop the technological solutions as our nations seek to adapt to climate change. The Caribbean region and the wider world face an epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases as the quality and quantity of life is adversely affected by diabetes, hypertension, cancer and other such diseases. The epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases is highly correlated with the rise of sedentary lifestyles and a global food system that produces and distributes unhealthy foods. As you graduate from our academy I implore you not to sit on your laurels but to go out and become the next generation of globally impactful health and wellness advocates from the Caribbean. I implore you to lead the way in food security for the Caribbean and easy access to healthful foods.
I take this opportunity to offer, on behalf of myself and the team at Five Islands Campus, heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2023, the fourth graduating class of the campus and the class graduating in the 75 th year of our beloved university’s existence. We want to thank you for entrusting us with the task of shaping such a critical phase in your development. We congratulate you on your efforts and sacrifices and also extend congratulations to your family and support system. As you graduate from our academy, the world appears to be at a major tipping point as humankind confronts the Triple C Crisis comprising of the existential threat of Climate Change, an epidemic of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases, an explosion of gun-related Crime in the Caribbean at the dawn of the 5 th Industrial Revolution powered by advances in Artificial Intelligence.
