September celebrates National Rehabilitation Week, and we are so proud to be rehabilitation therapists who get you moving in the right direction. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy are all important pieces of the rehabilitation process, and it is our privilege to provide these to the communities in Southwest Georgia. Rehabilitation is “the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy.” Physical therapy plays an important role in daily movement by helping you regain your independence in the safest and most effective ways. Whether it has to do with aches and pains, injuries, or weakness and imbalances, Physical Therapy trains your muscles to get you not only moving but feeling back to normal. Occupational Therapy is a crucial rehab component as well. Occupational Therapy helps people regain the ability to perform activities required in daily life, such as eating, brushing their teeth, and getting dressed. If one has difficulty performing activities such as these, Occupational Therapy is the solution to relearn how to do them or make adaptations based on personal changes to continue doing them independently. Speech Therapy also plays an important role in rehabilitation by helping people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties speak and communicate. If one is experiencing speech difficulties and cannot communicate in the way they need, it can be extremely difficult to live a normal life. Our Speech Therapists help our patients regain their speech and language abilities and feel more comfortable communicating their wants and needs to those around them. Rehab may be required after a physical injury, a stroke, or even a cardiac event. FYZICAL provides Cordele with the updated technology, education and services to recover from these events and get back to living normal lives as quickly as possible. It may not always be easy, but we get you moving in the right direction! Injury and Post-Surgery Rehabilitation If you recently experienced an injury or had surgery of any kind, the use of those muscles is put on hold. When your injury has healed or surgery is finished, it’s easy to want to resume your previous training, movement and activities – but that’s not always best for you and your body. Physical Therapy after an injury or surgery retrains and strengthens the muscles that have weakened or experienced trauma and regains your range of mobility. A sudden transition back to your regular training and activities could reaggravate the injury, slow down recovery, or cause bigger problems down the road. VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “

“Let all that you do, be done in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:14

Our Physical Therapists will work with you to create a plan that will let your muscles get used to working again at a pace that won’t injure or strain them. This means when you get back into your activities, you’re less likely to experience problems, pain or other injuries while training or things like folding the laundry and carrying groceries. Stroke Rehabilitation Strokes have a wide range of different effects on people. That means stroke rehabilitation can’t look the same for everyone! We treat each patient based on the skills they lost from their stroke. Stroke rehabilitation often involves all three of our disciplines: Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy. Physical Therapy helps patients relearn motor skills, such as walking, sitting, and standing. Occupational Therapy helps patients relearn daily tasks, such as writing, cooking, dressing and eating. Speech Therapy helps patients relearn language skills or learn other forms of communication. With patience and dedication, stroke survivors can regain much of what a stroke seems to have taken from them. COVID-19 Rehabilitation COVID-19 can affect several physiological systems and have both short- and long-term effects on patients, including a variety of physical impairments. Physical therapists play an important role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, as they contribute to the prevention and rehab of impairments caused by the illness, in addition to assisting with functional independence and facilitating individuals’ reintegration into society and jobs. The PT protocol for these patients includes low- intensity aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening, and balance training to improve their safety, functional mobility, and allow a full return to their prior level of function. If you or someone you know are experiencing post-COVID effects, contact your physician for a referral for a physical therapy evaluation.
