Q&A with Tony Cruz,

What steps is the City taking to expand bike-friendly infrastructure and encourage more cycling? The City of Irvine is committed to enhancing bike safety and accessibility for riders of all ages and abilities. A key initiative in this effort was the recent installation of the Cadence Class IV bikeway, designed to provide a safer and more comfortable riding experience. Building on this progress, a second Class IV bikeway was added this spring on Phantom. This addition will further improve bike connectivity, making it easier for families and children to access key destinations such as the Great Park, local schools, and surrounding neighborhoods. These investments reflect the City’s dedication to expanding bike-friendly infrastructure and promoting cycling as a convenient and enjoyable mode of transportation.
Tony Cruz understands first-hand what makes a city truly bike friendly. As a former Olympic cyclist and seasoned competitor on the world stage, he’s spent countless hours in the saddle. Cruz competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was the 1999 U.S. National Criterium Champion, and won the 2004, 2005, and 2006 Tour de Nez. Now, as a Mobility Programs Analyst for the City of Irvine, Cruz is bringing his passion for cycling and sustainable transportation planning together to help shape the future of mobility in Irvine. From expanding the City’s network of protected bikeways to fostering a culture of sustainable transportation, he’s at the forefront of making Irvine safer and more accessible for cyclists of all ages and abilities. In this issue of Inside Irvine , Cruz shares insights on the City’s efforts to improve mobility, his perspective on what makes Irvine a great place to ride, and practical tips for incorporating cycling into everyday life.
