It has been lovely to welcome students back to school this week and hear their holiday news. Students have clearly enjoyed the holiday and have returned to school full of energy and positivity.

On Tuesday this week the Music department took a group of students to the Royal Opera House to enjoy a fantastic performance of Hansel and Gretel. Students were thrilled by the magical retelling of the classic fairy tale and the opportunity to see it performed in the iconic venue. On Thursday our Year 11 GCSE Art students visited Tate Britain to get some inspiration for their final GCSE submissions. Our A level Fashion students have also been busy doing their mock practical exams this week. I am very much looking forward to seeing the exhibition of all of their work in the summer term. The Waldegrave bake off competition will run throughout this half term and staff are very excited to be judges. Today we started with our Year 11 who impressed with their delicious cupcakes. It was lovely chatting to the bakers last night, who all worked so well together. It was difficult to choose the winner, but congratulations to 11PRE for the winning biscoff and banana flavour cupcakes, with runners up 11FHE with apple crumble and 11EAH with chocolate and salted caramel following closely. HEALTH AND WELLBEING
For many of us, the start of a new year means self-improvement and the promise of, ‘new year, new me’. This mindset often fuels our New Year’s resolutions and is exacerbated by social media that tends to be full of new diet and exercise fads or other suggestions that we need to change. This can help us stay motivated during January, which can be a tough month following the holidays, with spring still feeling far away. But the expectations and pressure we put on ourselves aren’t always helpful and can be particularly difficult for students to navigate. If we struggle to live up to the impossible standards we set, it can make us feel guilty and bad about ourselves. Or we might push ourselves too hard and find that we’re burnt out before the first month is over. The Mental Health Foundation has a number of tips for mentally healthy new year resolutions. They suggest any resolutions should be framed in positive language (‘I will start’, rather than ‘I will stop’), that they are flexible, made with self-kindness, rather than self-criticism, and that we re-frame how we respond if we don’t meet those goals. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
It has been great to welcome back the students to school this week, everyone looks refreshed and we are ready to dive into our last full term of learning together!
As you are aware this is a significant time for parents and students as we approach the final stages of the GCSE journey. We have encouraged the students to stay focused, motivated, and supportive of one another, dedicated to making the most of the opportunities ahead, from completing assessments to preparing for what comes next.
Please remember, the whole team at Waldegrave are here to support you every step of the way.
This week Year 11 kicked off the Waldegrave 2025 ‘Bake Off’ competition. After school on Thursday bak- er representatives from each form got busy in the food technology department, producing some won- derful looking cupcakes. Our judges (& many of the pupils) tasted the delicious offerings at lunchtime today. Winners will be announced next week. As we start the new year this is an ideal time to make sure all students have their full lanyards looking smart and take the opportunity to replenish all their stationary ready for the year and exams ahead. Lastly, a reminder to all that Waldegrave Sports and Clubs will start next week - please see the full list of activities for the Spring Term on the website here. It would be great to see Year 11 keeping active and taking part, as these activities can be a positive distraction.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins
In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Please take a look, have a go and talk to your child about how they approached the problem and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form groups!
ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS FOR PARENTS
CALLING ALL MULTILINGUAL PARENTS!!
Waldegrave would like to invite parents and car- ers to join our free English language skills group.
Running every Thursday during term-time this group, hosted by Waldegrave teachers, offers free English lessons in school for our parents and carers who would like to practise and/or improve their English language skills. It is also a good opportunity to meet with other multilingual parents. If you would like to join us, please come to the school’s main reception at 2:10pm on Thursdays during term time. Classes are for 1 hour finishing at 3:15pm. We look forward to welcoming you!
