DON’T BE LIKE MY DAD A Reminder to Honor Your Health
There is a big difference between working to live and living to work.
have played out differently for him if he had gone to get a thorough blood test instead of neglecting his health? When my dad passed away, my wife was pregnant with our first child. He never got to know any of his grandchildren. As a father who works in the health care industry, I never want to overlook anything that would deprive me of enjoying the longest and healthiest life possible. I want to give myself the shot at longevity my dad and members of his generation didn’t have. I’m fortunate to have a successful business that keeps me busy, but I’ll never let that stand in the way of taking care of myself — nor should you ever let your life get in the way of living as long as you can. If it’s been some time since you’ve had comprehensive blood work, I strongly urge you to do so. Let’s be honest — how much time, pain, and anguish will it cost you to get a simple test? I’m not suggesting you must Natural Solutions for Health is pleased to offer $20 off comprehensive blood tests in March. Please contact us today to schedule your appointment.
Life gets busier and more demanding every day. Between our work and family commitments, it’s very easy to feel the days, weeks, and months fly by as we jump from one obligation to the next. Unfortunately, it seems we all have time for everything but our health. My dad passed away from colon cancer in 1997 at only 60 years old. Years later, I accompanied my mom to a funeral for one of her friends. As she introduced me to her friends in attendance — all in their mid-70s to mid-80s — I couldn’t help but notice they were all widows. I thought, “What happened to all the husbands?” I later talked with my uncle — my mom’s brother — about how odd the scene felt. He explained that men of his generation often ignored signs of poor health and either worked through their pain or put off looking into it. Whether due to busy schedules or just plain stubbornness, many men of my uncle’s generation kept the doctors at bay until it was too late. His words immediately made me think of my dad. Would he have identified and beat his cancer had he gone to see a doctor when his symptoms were still light? Would things
completely overhaul your whole life, but it’s worth getting at least a solid overview of your health — especially if you’re at the age when grandkids start entering the picture. There’s no point in working hard and keeping busy if you’re not around to enjoy what matters most. March is the time for spring-cleaning. As you work on better organizing your home and yard, you should do the same for your health — no matter your age or gender. There are too many joys in life still to experience to allow yourself to fall victim to things you have the power to change. In that spirit, I’m offering $20 off comprehensive blood tests at my office through the end of the month. Please contact us today to schedule your opportunity to gain better insight into your health. Don’t be like my dad — do what you can to give yourself more time to spend with those who love you. –Dr. Tom Sladic To order supplements or blood work, call 248-912-2962.

DRINKING DONE DIFFERENTLY
RIDING THE ALKALINE WATER WAVE
Ready to experience one of the hottest — and wettest — celebrity health trends hitting Hollywood and beyond? If you admire Jennifer Aniston’s radiant skin or Tom Brady’s lengthy football career, you may want to try alkaline water. Endorsed by the aforementioned actor and athlete and a growing list of other notables — including model Miranda Kerr and singer Beyoncé — alkaline water is produced through electrolysis to have a higher pH than standard bottled water. Many believe it possesses properties that can improve a person’s complexion, fight heart disease, and aid in cancer prevention, among many other benefits. SCIENCE-DRIVEN SIPS In addition to providing the apparent health benefits of traditional water, many say alkaline water offers drinkers a gateway to A-list health. Enthusiasts claim the product’s
higher pH improves metabolism and energy levels, detoxifies the body, promotes glowing skin, and reduces the likelihood of bone loss by neutralizing acid in the bloodstream and hydrating the body more efficiently. THE PRICE OF POURED HEALTH While alkaline water advocates are quick to praise the product, a higher pH comes with a higher price tag for consumers. Depending on your brand of choice, one gallon of premium alkaline water may cost more than $30 ! Because it is a human-made product
and not something that simply flows from our taps, alkaline water requires processes including mineralization, filtration, ionization, and quality assurance before it reaches supermarket shelves. These expenses and the costs of good old-fashioned marketing have contributed significantly to the sticker shock frugal shoppers feel.
HYDRATION AND HYPE So, is alkaline water worth it? While
encouraging people to drink more water is never bad, the jury is still out on the ultimate benefits of this pricey libation. Although the Mayo Clinic acknowledges that some studies have shown a link between alkaline water and bone health, more extensive research is needed to prove all other claims, including cancer-fighting properties. As with any trendy health fad, receiving sound advice from your physician may spare your body and bank account from unnecessary habits.
SMALL SHOP, BIG HEART
A Salute to Mom-and-Pop Business Owners
In case you’re unaware, March 29 is National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day. It’s a celebration that’s very dear to my heart, as many of my clients are small-business owners. Whether they own a market, grow greenhouse fruits and vegetables, build furniture, or operate small neighborhood shops, they represent the independent spirit that drives our country’s success. I’ll always salute and support them.
From a customer’s perspective, many of us surely agree that small businesses are often more in tune with offering personal care and quality than focusing on shareholder profits. If a shop sells a bushel of apples, there’s a very good chance those apples are of the highest possible quality. There are exceptions, but most mom-and-pop businesses are truly dedicated to delivering the best goods or services possible — and they do that by focusing on people rather than numbers. Naturally, running a small business is a nonstop commitment that demands wearing many hats at once. One of my accountants once told me that 5 out of 10 small businesses fail. If you’ve made it, congratulations! You deserve nothing but happiness and success. May you always be grateful for what you’ve accomplished and have faith you will continue to grow.
On a personal note, I’m incredibly proud to be a small-business owner and offer something most large operations can’t. It’s far too common for larger entities to categorize people as “pregnant moms” or “cancer patients” instead of as individuals with unique histories and specific needs. Personal relationships are not born in factories; they result from connecting with a professional who truly cares about the personal stories and well-being of the people who depend on them. Without that focus and commitment, Natural Solutions for Health wouldn’t exist. Thank you for supporting small businesses. Happy National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day to all those who work every day to make their customers feel heard and understood!

Through acting, you’ll notice improvements in your concentration and memorization. Depending on
the play, you may be required to stay moving, which will benefit your physical health. Plus, you’ll get many opportunities to socialize with your castmates. Many local theaters actively look for aspiring actors to audition.
marathons, lifting weights, or joining a sports club at this point. It can make you wonder if other options exist to add more physical activity to your daily routine. The answer is yes. Here are two creative aging activities you can explore.
BUST A MOVE You may have fond memories
of dancing in clubs, at weddings, or during special events, but the
