QUAD CITIZENS TO KNOW

QC ALE TRAIL & BREWERIES

This year, we’re raising a glass to five years of the QC Ale Trail , where craft beer enthusiasts can explore the region’s thriving brewery scene. This Trail invites locals and visitors alike to sip their way through some of the area’s finest breweries and taprooms. Check in at participating locations and earn prizes while supporting local brewers who bring unique flavors and creative brews to the Quad Cities. Kick things off at Front Street Brewery , Iowa’s first brewpub, where tradition meets innovation along the Mississippi River. At Bent River Brewery , experience

Kara Taghon & Brooke Matheis The Atlas Collective

In Downtown Moline, The Atlas Collective stands as more than just an indie bookstore and cafe. Founded by Kara Taghon in 2023, this “third space” is a sanctuary where inclusivity, creativity, and community thrive. Taghon created The Atlas Collective with a vision: to offer a welcoming space for others who might not always feel seen in traditional settings. “I wanted a space that felt like home,” she shares. Partnering with creative director Brooke Matheis, who leads the shop’s social media, design, and signage, the duo transformed that vision into a vibrant community hub. Named after Kara’s dog, Atlas, The Atlas Collective is a woman- and queer-owned business that has quickly become a fixture in the Quad Cities—and a fan-favorite stop on the QC Coffee Trail .

to explore amplified ales. Over at Twin Span Brewing , you’ll find elevated pub fare alongside a robust lineup of handcrafted beers. The cozy space reflects the warmth and diversity of the QC community, with shelves stocked by an inclusive selection of authors. Visitors are encouraged to “sit and stay,” whether browsing, joining a book club, or enjoying the cafe. Taghon says the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. “We opened our doors, and people just came, wanting to be part of this space,” says Kara. “We’ve attracted a beautiful mix of ages, backgrounds, and families. It’s everything we hoped for.” Beyond books, The Atlas Collective hosts events like book clubs and community gatherings that celebrate diverse perspectives and foster conversation. “We wanted a space where people could just come as they are, with no strings attached,” Kara adds. This mission has resonated deeply with the Quad Cities, making The Atlas Collective a valued gathering space for inclusivity and connection in the QC.
