The Mississippi (indigenous name – “missisipi,” meaning great water) was significant in the settlement of the Quad comprised of multiple communities. The largest cities in the metro area include Davenport, IA, Moline, IL, Bettendorf, IA, Rock Island, IL, and East Moline, IL. Cities region and the Mississippi River's physical and economic development. The river, fertile land, lumber, rail, river transport, and business growth opportunities were the draw for many. Our region is one of Native American history (Sauk and Fox), and the influences that immigrants brought during the 1800s provided the area with a rich ethnic tradition. German, Belgian, Irish, Greek, Armenian, English, Welsh, and Hispanic cultures have all impacted the growth and expansion of the Quad Cities region. African Americans settled in the region as early as the 1830s. There were two significant periods of African American migration to the area, the years up to and including the Civil War and the Great Migration of the first half of the 20th century. In the 19th century, African Americans fleeing slavery and the Civil War came because it was a major port in a free territory on the Mississippi River. Iowa and Illinois were free territories and free states when they joined the Union. The building of the Rock Island Lines and factories resulted in a surge of Hispanic immigration to the region, creating entire communities of workers since the early 1900s. Today, their cultures and impact on our region have become an integral part of who we are. The Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, family-owned businesses, neighborhoods, and events like Mercado on Fifth and the annual Día de los Muertos parade add to the culture of our community. The Quad Cities region is one of immigration, multiculturalism, and acceptance of beliefs and lifestyles. This diversity enhances the tapestry of our community experiences, growth, and cultural makeup.
