LET'S GO TO INDIA
Missionary Stories for Boys and Girls
CAROL TERRY
True life stories, brimful of interest and action, taken from the files of the Pandita Ramabai Mission of India — stories which will fascinate and challenge any child 5 to 8. These are tales of transformation — showing first the starvation, disease and heartbreak of little orphan children who have been cast off by mothers and fa thers. Then, when exposed to an atmos phere of love and understanding, these little ones have in many cases become teachers, nurses and staff workers, liv ing useful Christian lives, in their own needy country. Among the thrilling stories included are: The Good Shepherd Finds His Sheep
M a m a , I would appreciate it very much if you would put the dirty dishes on the counter over there. I am trying to wash them in proper order.” With this gentle rebuke Mark turned back to his job of dish wash ing. Mother was delighted at the obvious restraint with which her young son spoke. She learned later that this was a matter which had been making him “ sizzle.” It had been Mother’s custom to scrape and rinse the dishes before washing. Then Mark and Ardyth washed and dried (they still do) as Mother put them away. Lately, be cause of being in a greater hurry than usual, Mother had not attempt ed an orderly array of glasses, silver, dishes, cooking utensils in that order, counting on Mark to sort them as he washed. Two things Mother had not reck oned with: She had taught her son good order for the greatest efficiency, and to that Mark intended to adhere. Further, Mark’s developing personal ity rebelled at imposition, of which, let’s face it, Mother was guilty, and this on a job for which he has no special relish. Those words, “ I am trying o wash these in order” had a penetrating effect on Mother’s thinking. Where there is thoughtless hurry, work is harder and less efficiently done. It also appears that a rebuke can be stem and effective couched in gentle words and tone. “ I would appreciate . . . in proper order.” The Bible has something to say about kindness and order. Mark helped his Mother remember the message, “ Be ye kind one to anoth er . . .” (Ephesians 4 : 32) ; and “ Let all things be done decently and in order” (I Corinthians 14:40). Oh yes! There is something else. How about practicing what you preach, Mother? “ . . . be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation (manner of life), in charity (love) . . .” (I Timothy 4:12). Thank You, Father, for lessons “ out of the mouths of -babes.”
