Science and the Bible by Bolton Davidheiser Chairman, Science Division Biola College MEN C A N T BECOME FLIES

HOW CAN THE JEW know CHRIST This 75-year old mission was found ed to bring a Christian witness to the Jew. Every day in many cities in the U. S. and Israel a staff of dedicated workers make their way along the streets in business and residential areas to engage Jews in conversation concerning Messiah - Jesus. Children are gathered for club meetings and are won to the Saviour. Radio messages reach millions of Jews every week, in North America and Israel. The results — - the Lord says, "Sow the seed . . . and I will give the in crease." W ill you share in this seed sowing ministry? A copy of the A.M.F. Monthly will be mailed to you free if you write today to: Archie A. M ac Kinney, Director American Messianic Fellowship 7448 N. Damen Ave., Chicago 45. III.

A f e w y e a r s a g o Hollywood pro duced a picture which was the story of a man who dabbled in atom ic physics and turned himself into a fly. Henceforth his wife had an un derstandable reluctance for swatting flies. A reward of $100 was offered to the first person who could prove that it couldn’t happen. (An article about this appeared in The King’s Business, November, 1958.) An in structor in physics in Indianapolis was able to prove to the satisfaction of the producers of the picture that it really could not happen, and he collected the reward. Charles Darwin heard that a trav eler in America had seen a bear swimming in a river and snapping at insects. From this Darwin concluded that if bears were able to find a good supply of food in this manner, some of them would resort to the rivers and eventually would become aquatic animals the size of whaled and with wide mouths. Of course Darwin thought this transformation would take many generations. No reward was offered to anyone who could prove that it couldn’t happen, but Erik Nordenskiold in his History o f Biology says that this strange conclusion discloses a weakness in Darwin’s thinking. If this is to be considered strange, what is to be said of the modern evolutionists who believe that the great whales (and mammals in general) developed from small mouse-like animals which live in trees and are called tree shrews or tupaiids ? Professor Loren Eiseley believes that there never would have been any human beings if our early ground - dwelling four-footed ances tors had not been chased up into the trees by an advance of more suc cessful rodents. He says that if our forebears had not been thus forced to take refuge in the trees, we would probably now be four-footed crea tures that bark at each other in the moonlight. Some time ago a scientist turned things around when he wrote a seri ous paper in which he argued that monkeys evolved from men. He found the evidence for this in one abnormal embryo of a tree shrew.

Another scientist expressed the belief that some European toads evolved from one kind of protozoa (single-celled microscopic water ani mals), while other amphibians evolv ed from different protozoa, and mam mals evolved from still different pro tozoa. He reached this conclusion by comparing the reproductive cells of the animals with the shapes of the protozoa. Something like this might be expected to be found in a satire making sport of the idea of evolu tion, but it was a serious article. George Gaylord Simpson, the emi nent paleontologist, listed the vari ous ways in which horses could have come into being. One possibility was that animals called c o nd y l a r t h s might have given birth to “ dawn horses.” He said that although this has been considered seriously by some scientists, it is so unlikely that it should not be accepted “ unless we can find no hypothesis more likely to explain the observed facts. . . .” In other words, he is willing to accept so unlikely a possibility if there is nothing better, and he implies that hp one could prove that it could not have happened that way. It would be interesting to see what would happen if a substantial reward were offered to the first per son who could prove that any of the examples here cited from serious scientists could not happen. If a com mittee of biologists acted as judges, it is very unlikely that anyone would collect the money. It is very difficult to prove that something cannot happen. In fact, the physics instructor who collected the reward for proving that a man cannot turn into a fly did not really prove it at all, for the moving pic ture corporation awarded him the money because he “ gave the most p l au s i b l e scientific possibilities.” This is far from proof. V. Bertalanffy pointed out that Darwinian evolution cannot be dis proved. The fact that it cannot be disproved does not mean that it is true. In spite of many assertions to the contrary, it cannot be proved either.
