(continued from page 7) One thing we know: this present situation reveals a shocking moral and spiritual degeneracy. Somewhere during this past generation there has been a tragic letdown. There has been neglect in home, school and church in the teaching of respect for law — the laws of God and the laws of man. Discipline has become a mockery. The very word is taboo in the minds and on the lips of count less adults and the vast majority of the younger generation. So-called “ rights of the individual” have been so magnified that the rights of other individuals. and society as a whole are no longer considered important. The unscriptural ph i l o s o phy and practice of allowing every man to do that which seems right in his own THE PRUNED BRANCH It is the branch that bears the fruit That feels the knife, To prune it for a larger growth And fuller life, Though every budding twig be lopped And every grace Of swaying tendril, springing leaf Be lost a space. Oh, thou whose life of joy seems reft, Of beauty shorn, Whose aspiration lie in dust, All bruised and torn, Rejoice, though each desire, each dream. Each hope of thine Shall fall and fade; it is the hand Of love divine That holds the knife, that cuts and breaks With tenderest touch, That thou, whose life hast borne some fruit, May now bear much. Annie Johnson Flint eyes is destroying us. Every civiliza tion that followed this course sank into oblivion. There is no evidence anywhere that there is anything in herent in the makeup of the country we love which can keep it from suffering the same tragic end. There is a grave question whether we have not already passed the point of no return. One thing alone can save us: The prayers of God’s peo ple that our nation may awake to its deadly peril, and the clarion call from the clergy — hitherto so leth argic — to reverse this downward course. May we return to an awe and godly fear of Almighty God, a trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, and to a wholesome respect for righteous law and the rights of others before we completely collapse from internal corruption.
