FOCUSING ON FAMILY AND TOGETHERNESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Every year during the holiday season, I like to step back from the hustle and bustle, parties, gatherings, and events to appreciate and embrace the togetherness. Looking from the outside in, I’m able to truly value the time spent with loved ones, which is one of the greatest parts of the season. Many people spend so much time searching high and low for the perfect gifts, bouncing from one event to the next, cleaning their homes, or slaving away in the kitchen. As stress levels climb, you need to slow down and carve out time for loved ones. After all, that’s where the true memories of the season lie.

Can you maybe tag along with a family member for some grocery or holiday shopping? As we’ve navigated two tough years and head into an unpredictable year ahead, many have lost loved ones and are going through personal challenges and struggles. If someone doesn’t have anywhere to be for the holidays, invite them to pull up a chair at your table. I’d also like to take a moment to thank you all for being patient with us. It’s a blessing to be as busy as we are because we love taking care of everyone, but sometimes, I know it can be difficult for our patients to get into the office. We are running behind at times and are trying to do everything we can to mitigate that. We are proud to announce that we are in the works of building a new office in Longview, Texas, and on Sept. 27, 2021, we opened the doors to the new office in Tyler, Texas. It’s a great new space with eight operatories, two sedation suites, a media room, and a consultation room to provide us more room to best serve our clients in a timely and efficient manner. Everything is brand new and decorated thanks to my wife, Jennifer! We appreciate you and wish you and your family a very happy and healthy holiday season! We look forward to seeing you in the new year.

ones are all simple ways to make big, lasting memories. Be present with your friends and family — it’s the best gift of all! It’s tough to connect with others when you’re glued to your phone, tablet, or computer. Unplugging is a healthy way to interact and recharge. During family time, try to avoid conversations that might lead to disagreement. The holidays are all about happiness and spreading cheer and positivity. Take the time to reminisce, enjoy the company of others, play games, kid around, and create fun memories. Respect is a game changer!

HOW TO WAKE UP REFRESHED THE TYPE OF SLEEP YOU GET MATTERS!

Are you getting enough shut-eye but still feeling groggy when you wake up? The type of sleep you get matters, and a sleep schedule can help ensure you’re cycling through all the stages of sleep your body needs. Sleep is broken up into four different stages. During the first stage, which only lasts about 5–10 minutes, your body is softly drifting off, and as your brain slows down, your breathing and heartbeat slow as well. When you transition to the second stage, you become less aware of your surroundings, your eye movements cease, and your body temperature drops. Moving into the third stage, your body will drift into a deep sleep, where you will not be awakened by small noises and your muscles are completely relaxed. In the fourth stage, your body is in a deep, restful state. In stages three and four, you’re getting REM sleep, which is when

your body is in its deepest sleep, and your breathing, heart rate, and temperature all reach the lowest level. In these stages, your body is able to fight sickness, begin repairing itself, and commit information to memory. During REM sleep, which occurs about 90 minutes after your head hits the pillow, your body is completely relaxed, and you begin to dream. Throughout the night, you will progress through these stages of sleep multiple times, but usually not in a perfect sequence. You will likely be in each stage of sleep about 4–5 times per night, and one cycle typically lasts about 90–110 minutes. Too much or too little REM or non-REM sleep can affect the quality of your sleep and how refreshed you feel. Quality sleep is important to make sure you are recharging your body, strengthening your mind and immune system, and prioritizing your health.

If you never achieve deep sleep throughout the night, sleep deprivation sets in, and you won’t get the proper rest you need to recover. By setting a sleep schedule, you can make sure you are hitting the hay each night at a reasonable hour and allowing yourself to properly cycle through the different stages of sleep. Be sure to clear your mind before tucking yourself into bed and make sure your bed is comfortable to promote the best possible sleep — your body counts on it!

The Recovery Process

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANT HEALING

If you’ve been considering getting dental implants, you’ve probably thought about the procedure, the cost, and of course, the amazing results. However, have you given the recovery process any thought? Here are some things to expect and some tips to help speed along the healing. Keep in mind that having implants put in is a surgical procedure, so it’s important that you treat the recovery process as such! Post-surgery, you can expect to have some bleeding at the incision sites. Your incisions will be packed with gauze to minimize bleeding, and you will be instructed on how to change out the gauze until the bleeding stops. After the procedure, you should rest and avoid any exercise, heavy lifting, getting up quickly, sudden movements, or bending to

ensure you don’t aggravate the bleeding and swelling as you heal.

After surgery, your diet will need to consist of soft foods, such as bananas, puréed foods, avocados, eggs, and smoothies. Avoid hard nuts, chips, apples, and acidic foods that may hinder your recovery process. Most importantly, be patient with your body while it heals and remember to be very gentle when brushing your teeth! If you have any questions, we are here to help. Call us today!

While everyone is different, the recovery process generally takes about a week. However, some factors can impact the time it takes to heal, including:

The number of implants you received at one time

Whether or not your procedure required a bone graft to strengthen your jaw

Whether or not your sinuses needed to be lifted before the procedure

How readily your body accepts the titanium implant

CRISPY FISH WITH BROWN BUTTER SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

What It Does to Your Teeth Craving Sugar?

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 5-oz Chilean sea bass or salmon filets, skin-on • Salt and pepper, to taste

• 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 1/2 cup blanched hazelnuts, chopped • 2 tsp lemon juice • Lemon wedges, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. In an unheated skillet, add oil. Season fish with salt and pepper, then add to skillet (skin-down). 2. Heat the skillet to medium and cook for 4 minutes. With a spatula, press each filet down, rotating between filets every few seconds. When the skin begins to crisp, stop pressing and cook 8–10 minutes, then flip and cook for another minute. Remove the fish. 3. Wipe the skillet clean and return to medium heat. Add the butter and hazelnuts. Heat, swirling continuously, until butter foams and browns. Remove from heat. 4. Stir in lemon juice and season to taste. Pour over fish, garnish, and serve with salad. TAKE A BREAK

While you would need to consume insane amounts of sugar to have a true sugar addiction, the cravings are real! If you have a sweet tooth, you know the struggle, and some people are affected more than others. Sugar wreaks havoc on your teeth. When foods are higher in sugar, the bacteria in your mouth feeds on it and produces an acidic byproduct that can dissolve your tooth enamel, which is the material intended to protect your teeth. When your enamel erodes, the acid can lead to cavities and tooth decay. Sugars found in sweet foods can also impact your blood sugar levels, which can lead to your body having a difficult time healing. While your gums are constantly battling bacteria floating around in your mouth, if they can’t heal properly, you are more at risk for developing gum disease. Gum tissue is not able to regrow on its own, so it’s extra important to take care of the tissue you have! In between dental visits, it is paramount to stick with proper brushing, rinsing, and flossing. If you are a sugar fanatic, you may also need to cut back. Instead of candy, opt for healthy fruits. Their natural composition is much less damaging than the synthetic sugars found in candy and sweets. Opting for sugar-free gum can also give you that sweet taste and curb your craving —mint flavoring works wonders for this! The drinks of choice for winter are usually warm and cozy — apple cider, hot chocolate, and wassail all have their place on the table. But no rule says you have to drink something hot when it’s snowy outside. In fact, a cold beverage might keep you warmer! A study from the Thermal Ergonomics Lab at the University of Ottawa found that when you drink something hot, it can cause you to sweat more and, as a result, will actually cool you off more than a cold drink!
