A study of the meaning and practice of Christian worship, its biblical basis, as well as its historical and contemporary dimen- sions. Emphasis is given to planning and conducting creative services for the local church. 502 CHURCH MUSIC IN THE UNITED STATES (3) A survey of the practice of church music for congregation, choir and instruments. 503 MUSIC CULTURES OF THEWORLD (3) An introductory study of the interrelationships between music and cul- ture through the examination of the music of varying cultures. Basic elements of music as they are found in world cultu res will be studied with specific application to the work of the Church. 521 HANDBELL WORKSHOP (I) The basic skills of handbell ringing and re sources for developing a handbell choir. 522 INSTRUMENTAL WORKSHOP (I) The use of instrumental music in the local church. 523 CHILDREN/YOUTH CHOIR WORK- SHOP ( I) The organization and administration of graded choirs for children and adolescents: choral literature and resource materials. 524 MUSIOARTS WORKSHOP (I) The integration of various media: the use of drama, audio-visual, lighting, sound re- production.

During the second semester a public festival service is required which is to be completely planned, organized, and con ducted by the student. The service is to in volve congregation, choir, instruments and one other media. 650 FINAL PROJECT (0) A formal paper stating the student's per sonal philosophy of church music and an oral exami nat ion coveri ng worship, church music in the United States or music cul tures of the world, and church music ad ministration.
