History 8 units To fulfill the 8 unit history requirement History 100 is required as well as either History 200 or Political Science 200. HIS 100 The West and the World (four units required). Students who may have completed three units of World civilization are advised to take History 110 Themes in Western Civilization. Alternate route for meeting History 100 is Humanities 230, Interdisciplinary studies, which incorporates at least one other general education offering. HIS 230 Interdisciplinary Studies (7) The shaping of human culture and thought to contemporary times, using a team-taught approach integrating History 100 with participating general education offerings. Value of credits released is equal to that of the courses if taken separately. HIS 200 United States History (four units required). or POL 200 Survey of American Government (four units required) . Students who may have completed three units of United States History or United States Government are advised to take History 210, Themes in American History to complete the requirement. Alternate route for meeting a minimum of four units of History 100 and four units of History 200 or Political Science 200. Students who demonstrate proficiency in their knowledge of History 100, 200 or Political Science 200 may opt for more advanced courses in these fields to meet their eight unit requirement. The respective · departments administer proficiency examinations twice a year in September and February for those who want to qualify for more advanced courses. History 470 (one unit) or Political Science 480 (one unit) must be taken concurrently with any departmen­ tally approved three-unit upper division course in these fields to meet the four unit general education require­ ment in both history and political science. 3 units Any one of the following will meet this requirement: PHI 202 Introduction to Philosophy PHI 205 Logic PHI 301 Greek and Roman Philosophy Philosophy

(equals third college semester) * Conversational language courses may be used toward the B. S. requirements but not the B.A. requirement. Students with two years of a high school language must take the 102 and 201 sections of the same language in order to complete the BA requirement If the student needs to review prior coursework, he should either audit 101 or forfeit all previous language experi­ ence by taking the first semester course for credit. Exceptions to this policy are noted under the appro­ priate departments (please note the unit difference per semester for classical languages). International students for whom English is a second language need not take a foreign language. (If you take a classical language for your foreign language you must take it through the 102 level for a B.S. degree.) English ENG ll0A/B Studies in Criticism and Composition Students with a SAT of less than 400 must take and pass Basic English Workshop within the first year of residence (before English 110). If a student wishes to challenge his/her SAT score he/she may take the English Placement Test administered by the English Department at the beginning of each semester. If he/she fails this test, he/she must take Basic English Workshop, English 090 (three semester hours with no credit toward graduation). ENG 250 Literature in Context Students may take any English 250 course to fulfill the literature requirement. Physical Education 4 activities No activity may be taken more than once for general education purposes, however, an intermediate or advanced class may be taken. Students 21 or becoming 21 during their first semester at Biola University are exempt from physical education requirement. (See the physical education section for complete information.)
