Literature An 18 unit concentration in literature of which 12 must be upper division (selection of the literature concentration must be made from the literature listing, including six units of English 250, English literature). COURSES Humanities 230 Interdisciplinary Studies (7) The shaping of human culture and thought to contemporary times, using a team-taught approach integrating History 100 with participating general education of ferings . Value of credits released is equal to that of the courses if taken separately. Humanities 230E: History 100, English 250 (7 units). Humanities 230P: History 100, Philosophy 202 (7 units).

OBJECTIVES The Departments of Communication, English, Foreign Languages, History and philosophy offer an interdepartmental major in humanities. It consists of an 18 units concentration in one area and two sup port areas of six upper division units each. The area of concentration is basically an emphasis in the desired field but offers more flexibility through advisement of the subject department. The objective of the humanities major is to provide the student with a broader perspec tive in selected liberal arts disciplines than is possible with a single subject matter. Courses taken to satisfy the general education require ment cannot be credited to the major. DEGREE PROGRAM A BACHELOR OF ARTs DEGREE IN HUMANmES is offered upon completion of the university baccalaureate and humanities major in one of the following concentrations. Classical Studies A major concentration of 18 upper divi sion units in Greek and 6 units minor con centration in two of the following: history, philosophy or Rhetoric. Possibilities include Ancient History 323, 324, Philosophy 301, 302 or English 450, Communication 383. English 350 - Greek/Latin Roots may serve as a support course. Total for major, 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division. The minor concentration and advisement will be through the Greek Department. Communication An 18 unit concentration in communica tion, of which 12 must be upper division, in cluding 386 and 478. Two areas of six upper division units each chosen from the support area options listed below. Total for major, 30 units, of which 24 units must be upper division. Advisement through the Communication Department. English An 18 unit concentration in English, of which 12 must be upper division. Two areas of six upper division units each cho sen from the support area options listed below. Total for major, 30 units, of which 24
must be upper division. Advisement through the English Department.
Foreign Language A concentration is offered in Greek or Spanish only and consists of 18 upper divi sion units. Two support areas of six upper division units each chosen from the support areas listed below. Total for major, 30 units of which 24 must be upper division. Advisement through the Department of Foreign Languages. History An 18 unit concentration in history (beyond the general education level) of which 12 units must be upper division. Two areas of six upper division each chosen from the support options listed below. Total for major, 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division. Advisement through the History Department. Philosophy An 18 unit concentration in Philosophy, of which 12 must be upper division, including 301 and two of the following courses: 302, 303, 404. Two support areas of six upper divi sion units each chosen from the options list ed below. Total for major, 30 units, of which 24 must be upper division. Advisement through the Philosophy Department. Support Area Options for Humanities Major Two support areas of six upper division units each are necessary for the major.
