HISTORYAND THEOLOGY OF MISSION HTM 540 PRINCIPLES OF CHURCH PLANTING (3) Astudy of the biblical mandate to establish local churches among all of the peoples making up mankind. Special emphasis on intercultural church planting among the unreached peoples of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the ethnic minor­ ities of the \\6tern world. HTM 546 HISTORY OF THE EXPANSION OF CHRISTIANITY (3) The background, origin, development and spread of the Christian faith from the apostolic period until today. Emphasis will be given to the modern era, especially contemporary growth dynamics in Africa , Asia and Latin America. HTM 550 CHRISTIANITY AND CULTURE (3) Anthropology approach to Christian theologiz­ ing; interrelationships between supracultural Christianity and human cultures. Focus on con­ version, revelation , communication, transforma­ tion , indigeneity and other related topics. HTM 555 INTRODUCTION TO WORLD MISSIONS (2) The nature of Christian outreach: a study of principles, history, and methodology of worldwide missions. HTM 556 WORLD RELIGIONS (2) The distinctive features of the historical ethnic religions, with special emphasis on their compari­ son and encounter with Christianity and their bearings upon missionary strategies. HTM 640 CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY FOR MISSIONARIES (3) The nature of man and his culture, special emphasis on intercultural communication of the Gospel. HTM 655 CONTEMPORARY THEOLOGY OF MISSION (3) An overview and critique of the various theol­ ogies of mission advocated by various branches of the Church down through the centuries, begin­ ning with Edinburgh 1910 to the liberation theol­ ogy debate of our day. HTM 691-692 TUTORIAL (3, 3) Aself-study course for experienced field work­ ers, under direction of a faculty mentor, in the subject area of the D.Miss. core requirement. This course is limited to D.Miss. students who can demonstrate prior knowledge and competence in the subject area of the required core. HTM 742 HISTORY OF MISSIONS (3) The background, development and spread of Christianity through world missions; geographical thrusts, growth dynamics and church structures. HTM 751 THEOLOGY OF MISSION (3) An analysis of the tensions within the Church focusing around the mission of the Church in the contemporary mrld with an attempt to formulate a biblical-contemporary expression of the theol­ ogy of the Church 's mission in light of those tensions.

Explanation of the relationships between an­ thropological theory, problem definition, research strategy and methodology, data collection and analysis, and generalization and application. Prerequisite: 601. !CS 610 LINGUISTICS AND THE BIBLE I (3) An introduction to the principles of Bible Translation, with special attention being given to the problems of lexical equivalence in translating from Greek into indigenous languages. Prerequi­ site: Greek and/or Descriptive Linguistics. JCS 621 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLINGUISTICS (3) Study of the interrelationships of language and society in areas such as folklore, worldview, bilingualism, personality, classifications and oth­ er topics. JCS 622 INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (3) Principles and processes of communicating from one culture to another. Focus on different perceptions, ways of thinking, values, non-verbal expression, language expression and sub-groups within a culture as they relate to the media and the message. !CS 691-692 TUTORIAL (3, 3) Aself-study course for experienced field work­ ers, under direction of a faculty mentor, in the subject area of the D.Miss. core requirement. Prerequisite: !CS 610. !CS 706 IDEOLOGICAL CONFLICT (3) Astudy of Marxism and other such ideologies and the conflict these generate in the world in educational, religious and political aspects of cul­ ture. JCS 710 LINGUISTICS AND THE BIBLE II (3) Advanced lexical equivalence problems in­ volved in translating from Greek into indigenous languages. Introductory considerations of dis­ course involved in Bible Translation. Prerequisite: JCS 610. !CS 721 TOPICS IN SOCIOLINGUISTICS (3) The methodologies of cognitive studies and cognitive styles are probed for value in encounter­ ing members of a distinctive culture or subculture and implication for Bible translation. Prerequi­ site: 520 or 621. !CS 803 QUALITATIVE RESEARCH (2) An advanced course on the ethnographic method, emphasizing rigorous research design and quality control with specific reference to edu­ cational research. JCS 804 QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH (2) Theory and method of survey research, ques­ tionnaire design, and the use of existing computer programs for statistical analysis in anthropology, missiology, and education.

This course will focus on the historical , cultur­ al and theological content leading the student toward mastery of the Book of Acts. This will be followed by a discussion of cogent missiological themes, such as evangelism, power encounter, contextualization and the supernatural in mis­ sions. SOCIETY, TECHNOLOGY AND MISSIONS STM 560 URBAN RESEARCH AND MINISTRIES (3) The use of social science techniques to learn about the people, needs and opportunities for evangelism in the city. STM 561 TOPICS IN APPLIED CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY (3) Application of anthropological insights to cross-cultural problems. Emphasis on: marriage customs, leadership patterns, political relations, indigenous movements, culture change, world­ view, etc. Prerequisite: !CS 300 or HTM 640. STM 562 CULTURE CHANGE (3) The study of how cultures change, the dynamics and processes of change, the place of change agents and the speed and intensity of change. Implications of such processes are exam­ ined in social, political, economic and religious aspects of society. STM 563 SEX ROLES IN SOCIETY (3) The dynamics of male and female roles in Western, non-Western and biblical cultures. Focus on responsibilities, obligations, expectations, leaderships and interrelationships as they relate to the society as a ;¥hole. STM 570 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLE TRANSLATION (2 or 3) An introduction to the principles and problems of intercultural communication with special em­ phasis on translating the Bible into indigenous languages. STM 571 TECHNOLOGY AND MISSIONS TOPICS (3) STM 581 JEWISH LIFE AND EVANGELISM (3) The cultural and religious patterns of the con­ temporary Jewish life and their significance in evangelism. STM 661 INTRODUCTION TO CHURCH GROWTH (3) Abasic understanding of church growth con­ cepts as related both to the local congregations and to the task of worldwide evangelization, with due emphasis on the Church Growth school of thought. STM 665 LEADERSHIP (3) Cross-cultural study of leadership including diverse patterns of authority, legitimacy, public support, leadership recruitment, and training as they affect communication, church growth and development worldwide. STM 672 BIBLE TRANSLATION (3) Principles of the semantic analysis of discourse structure. Prerequisite: Advanced Linguistics.
