Double Major Astudent may be graduated with two majors. The following infor mation is for those pursuing two majors: All prerequisites, supporting courses and departmental requirements for each major must be completed. The second major must have minimum of 18 upper division units unique to that major (i.e., minimum of 48 major units and 148 total units required - see individual major requirements) . The student must confer with the departments in which he will major and with the director of records. Minors Although Biola University does not require the student to have a minor for graduation, there are a number of instances in which a student may wish to take a minor, especiallyin planning for a career in teaching. By checking the various departments in the catalog, a student may determine if a minor is offered. Aminor usually requires a minimum of 18 units, 12 of which should be upper division and six of these should be unique to the minor, i.e. , not counted toward any other requirements. Writing Competency Exam Biola University agrees with the current emphasis in American higher education on the need for college graduates to be able to express themselves appropriately and effectively in writing. The skills learned in ENG 110 Criticism & Composition need to be practiced to be main tained, not only as a means of communication, but as a means of learning as well ; therefore , Biola encourages the use of writing when ever possible in every discipline throughout the student's undergraduate career. At a minimum of one year after taking ENG 110 A & Band at least three semesters before graduation - preferably during the first semes ter of the junior year - each student must take and pass the Writing Competency Exam (WCE) to confirm that writing skills have been maintained. Students who do not pass the exam should as soon as possible avail themselves of one of the following options for achieving competency: (I) Take advantage of individual or group tutoring opportunities in the Writing Lab in Sutherland Hall, Room 211, in preparation for re taking the exam. The student will pay a fee of $25 for re-taking the WCE. If option I is chosen and the WCE is failed the second time, the student must take option 2. (2) Enroll in ENG 210 Writing for Competency Agrade of C + or better in this course will fulfill competency requirements. Students are expected to complete the ENG 110 A & Brequirement in their first year at Biola. Neither the Writing Competency Exam nor ENG 210 can be substituted for the ENG 110 requirement. I. All baccalaureate degrees require a minimum of 130 semester units of credit for graduation. Each major consists of a minimum of 30 units of which 24 must be upper division. The Bachelor of Music degree requires 142 units.Adegree in biological science requires 135 units and nursing, 142 units. For specific major requirements please see indicated major listings. 2.
