301 NURSING OF THE FAMILY I - THEORY (5)

are welcome. Those intending to challenge nursing courses should make an appointment with the department of nursing as soon as accepted by the university. Requirements for Students Accepted into the Nursing Program: Astudent is required to have at his own ex­ pense a yearly physical examination and specific laboratory tests and immunizations by June 15. Students will not be permitted in the clinical agency without this. Each student is assessed for liability insurance through the university when participating in clinical courses. The university and cooperating agencies assume no responsibil­ ity for illness or accidents occuring during the school program. Astudent must arrange for his own transportation to clinical agencies as the university does not provide transportation. The senior nursing student in community health nursing must have a valid driver's license and access to a car. Valid CPR certification is required and must be renewed annually throughout the clinical nursing program. Theory and clinical must be taken concurrently in courses with a clinical component. Due to importance of clinical orientation, attendance is mandatory to proceed in nursing courses. Astudent must earn a mini­ mum grade of 2.0 in microbiology, statistics and in each nursing course, and maintain a cumula­ tive GPA of 2.0 in order to progress in nursing. Courses may be repeated one time only. Students withdrawing at a failing level will be permitted to repeat the course one time only. Students are permitted to withdraw from courses at a failing level two times only during the total clinical nurs­ ing program. Unsafe clinical nursing practice, regardless of GPA, is grounds for dismissal from the nursing program. Students who withdraw from nursing for any reason cannot be guaran­ teed a space when they plan to return. Transfer­ challenge students have equal access for open spaces in nursing courses. It is recommended that microbiology (BIO 221) be taken prior to Nursing of the Family I and II. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to take microbiology concurrent with Nursing of the Family I. Students will not be advanced to Level II without microbiology. Mandatory comprehensive NLN achievement exams will be taken at the completion of the nursing progam. Department Major: Biological Science 221 , 271 , 272; Chemistry IO I, l 02 (totaling 17 science units) ; Nursing 301, 302,310, 400, 410, 420, 430, 441 , 442 , 450. Supporting courses: Three units of each of the following: intercultural studies, soci­ ology, Psychology 200 and statistics. The general education requirement for a foreign language for nursing majors is two years of the same high school language or four units of a college lan­ guage. Nursing majors are exempt from general education requirements of literature (3) and his­ tory (4 of 8 units required). The annual Commitment and Pinning Service is financed by assessing each prenursing and clinical nursing student $5.00 per year. 300 PROFESSIONAL NURSING SEMINAR (1-3) Atransition seminar designed to facilitate so­ cialization into baccalaureate professional nurs­ ing. Designed for transfer-challenge students.

Implementation of the nursing process in de­ veloping countries where there is limited access to a physician. Open to Registered Nurses and Li­ censed Vocational Nurses and all clinical nursing majors. Offered interterm and/or summer session only. 420 ADVANCED MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING - THEORY (2) Implementation of the nursing process with adult clients experiencing complex disturbances in adaptive equilibrium. Primary focus is on pathophysiology in the physical subsystem. (C*) 420 ADVANCED MEDICAL/SURGICAL NURSING - CLINICAL (3) Clinical application of the nursing process with multicultural clients in the acute medical­ surgical setting. (C*) Fee: $100.00. 430 NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY - THEORY (3) Combines nursing theory with concepts of community health and community mental health. Prerequisites: 400 , 410, 420. 430 NURSING IN THE COMMUNITY - CLINICAL (5) Clinical application of the nursing process with individuals, families and communities to promote and maintain adaptive equilibrium. Fee: $100.00. 441 INTRODUCTION TO NURSING RESEARCH (2) The research process applied to nursing in­ cludes problem definitions and basic research de­ sign. Each student works on developing a basic research proposal. Prerequisites: 400 , 410, 420 , Statistics (may be taken concurrently with con­ sent of instructor). 442 APPLIED NURSING RESEARCH (1) Opportunity to critique literature, continue work on research proposal or participate in a research project. Prerequisite: 44 l. 450 LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT IN NURSING - THEORY (2) Combines theory of leadership and nursing care delivery systems with issues and trends in nursing. Prerequisites: 400, 410 , 420. 450 LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT IN NURSING - CLINICAL (5) Clinical application of leadership theory in giving and directing care for a group of clients. Students may elect experience from several clini­ cal settings. Fee: $100.00. 465 RURAL CLINICAL NURSE PLACEMENT PROJECT (3-4) Aclinical enrichment experience for Commu­ nity Health Nursing. An educational opportunity in rural nursing in northern California in settings such as home nursing service, public health de­ partments, Indian health projects, rural physi­ cian 's offices and acute and convalescent hospi­ tals. Prerequisite: 430. Offered lnterterm only. Transfer-Challenge Policy: For transfer nursing students, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses and other applicants with health profession back­ grounds .

(C*) Fee: $100.00. 302 NURSI GOF THE FAMILY II - THEORY (5) Continuation of 30 l. Implementation of the nursing process to facilitate adaptive equilibrium in the client. Includes normal growth and devel­ opment of the infant through adolescence. Pre­ requisite: 30 l. (C*) 302 NURSING OF THE FAMILY II - CLINICAL (4) Clinical application of the nursing process with clients in acute medical-surgical and com­ munity sett ings with emphasis on the surgical client. Includes Denver Developmental Assessment of a well child. (C*) Fee: $100.00. 305 PHARMACOLOGY (2-3) Astudy of the characteristics of drug families, drug actions and metabolism, therapeutic uses, untoward responses, precautions and contraindi­ cations. Principles for making sound nursing judgments in the administration of medications. 310 BEHAVIORAL CONCEPTS FOR NURSING PRACTICE (2) Concepts affecting the role of the professional nurse in promoting adaptive equilibrium. One and one half hours lecture; one and one-half hour discussion. (C*) 320 DIRECTED INDfVIDUAL STUDIES (1-3) Permits students to pursue special interests related to the profession of nursing. Open to clini­ cal nursing majors only with written consent of instructor. May be repeated with different content. Maximum of six units may be taken for credit. 321 CLINICAL ENRICHMENT (1-4) Opportunity for additional application of the nursing process in selected health care settings. Offered interterm and summer school. Open to clinical nursing majors only. Prerequisite: NUR 30 1. Fee $100.00. 400 MEN'D\L HEALTH NURSING - THEORY (2) Concepts related to nursing of adults with problems of adaptation resulting in psycho­ pathology. Focus is on the application of the nursing process to problems of psychopathology. Prerequisite: 302. (C*) 400 MEN'D\L HEALTH NURSING - CLINICAL (2) Clinical application of the nursing process with clients in mental health setting. (C*) 410 NURSING OF THE CHILDBEARING/ CHILDREARING FAMILY - THEORY (6) Implementation of the nursing process utiliz­ ing a family-centered approach to childbearing, maternal-child health promotion and care of the ill child. Prerequisites: 302, Biology 22 l. (C*) 410 NURSING OF THE CHILDBEARING/ CHILDREARING FAMILY - CLINICAL (6) Clinical application of the nursing process in providing family centered maternal-child health care in acute and community settings.
