Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies PHILOSOPHY OF BIBLICAL AND THEOLOGICAL STUDIES PROGRAMS The Master of Arts degree in Biblical Stud­ ies and the Master of Arts degree in Theologi­ cal Studies are intensive and highly special­ ized programs designed for those whose call­ ing to Christian service is not in the area of professional ministry. It is anticipated that candidates for these programs will have pur­ poses that coincide with the following: I. The training of college graduates who desire a more thorough grasp of the Bible in order to engage in Christian ministries at levels other than those that are usually performed by the ordained clergy. This would include medical doctors on the mission field, missionary pilots, church administrators , counselors, lay leaders in the local church and others. 2. The furnishing of a biblical background for those who are preparing for teaching in non-theological fields. 3. The furnishing of an academic back­ ground for those who find the Master of Arts degree ample for a teaching position either at home or in a foreign country 4. Providing a shorter program of study for missionaries who have only their fur­ lough time in which to further their formal training in the Scriptures. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants, to be accepted, must possess a bac­ calaureate degree. Each should be a graduate from a recognized ancVor regionally accredited college with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) . The Master of Arts with emphasis in Bible exposition is designed primarily for those who desire to take graduate biblical studies later in life. Therefore, those who apply for the program with this particular emphasis should be age 35 or older. All applicants must submit a written statement outlining their vocational objectives and how the degree might relate to those objectives.

6. Potential of the applicant for academic success will be determined by the Master of Arts in Ministry Committee which will interview each applicant and evaluate all credentials. REQUIREMENT FOR THE PREREQUISITE TRACK CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION I. Completion of all Prerequisite Track courses for a total of 27 units. 2. Attain a 2.50 grade point average in Prerequi­ site Track courses. 3. All Prerequisite Track courses must receive grades of Cor above. Courses in which a grade of less than a C is received must be rep~ted. But a maximum of tm (2) repeated cours~ in the Prerequisite Track will be allowed. PREREQUISITE TRACK CURRICULUM The program leading to the Prerequisite Track Certificate of Completion consists of 27 units and is comprised of the following courses: MIP 011 Theological Learning Skills . 3 MIP 012 Theological Reading 3 MIP 013 Theological Writing . 3 MIP 020 Foundations for Spiritual Growth 3 MIP 04 I New Testament Survey I . 3 MIP 042 New Testament Survey II 3 MIP 043 Old Testament Survey I 3 MIP 044 Old Testament Survey II 3 MIP 045 Doctrinal Foundations 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION MIP 011 THEOLOGICAL LEARNING SKILLS (3) Use of Library and biblical/theological refer­ ence works; study skills; notetaking skills. MIP 012 THEOLOGICAL READING (3) Reading, grammar, sentence and paragraph structure. MIP 013 THEOLOGICAL WRITING (3) Composition, writing papers for Bible and·the­ ology courses. MIP 020 FOUNDATIONS FOR SPIRITUAL GROWfH (3) Survey of human development, cognition, learning, motivation, socialization and personal­ ity theories with application to ministry for per­ sonal spiritual development and witness. MIP 041 NEW TESTAMENT I (3) Foundations of interpretation; survey of the gospels. MIP 042 NEW TESTAMENT II (3) Survey of the book of Acts and the epistles. MIP 043 OW TESTAMENT I (3) History of Israel's beginnings through the post­ exilic period. MIP 044 OW TESTAMENT II (3) Poetic and wisdom literature; prophetic books. MIP 045 DOCTRINAL FOUNDATIONS (3) Survey of Bible Doctrines including: Scripture, God, Christ, Holy Spirit, Man , sin, salvation, church and last things.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS A. Satisfactorilycomplete 62-66 semester units as outlined in the appropriate curriculum. 8. Submit an acceptable thesis, chosen in con­ sultation with the major advisor, or at the option of the major advisor and in lieu of the thesis , complete four additional units of electives. Students who write a thesis will have a total requirement of 62 units and those who take four additional units in lieu of a thesis will have a total requirement of 66 units. Three unbound copies of the thesis are to be submitted to the librarian. C. At least 24 units must be taken at this semi­ nary. D. Obtain a 3.0 average with no grade below a "C- " in all courses to be credited toward graduation. E. Complete the entire program in no more than five years. Students are placed on academic probation if their grade point average for any semester falls below 3.0 and will remain on probation as long as the single semester or cumulative grade point average remains below 3.0. The probation stu­ dents are granted one semester in which to bring their academic work up to the required level (3.0) for continuance in the seminary. Astudent cannot graduate while on probation. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS The Program Structure The academic programs leading to the degrees Master of Arts in Biblical Studies and Master of Arts in Theological Studies are comprised of 62-66 units structured in common to include I) biblical and theological foundations in the first year, 2) academic specialization in one of four theological disciplines in the second year and 3) additional elective courses determined by the advisor in con­ sultation with the student. The Program Reduction Based on Prior Aca­ demic Study Applicants who have taken undergraduate courses in biblical or theological studies may request a program reduction based on their colle­ giate work. An evaluation will be made by the director of records following established guide­ lines in order to determine competency within the following perimeters: I) undergraduate biblical studies which are parallel in content with required courses and 2) undergraduate biblical studies which may justify a reduction in elective units. On this basis the 62-66 unit program may be reduced by as much as 30 units, so that certain qualified applicants may earn the Master of Arts with a minimum 32-36 unit program.
