MIN 814 CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN MARRIAGE AND FAMILY MINISTRIES + Acourse designed to broaden and deepen the pastoral understanding of Christian marriage in the contemporary world. Emphasis on the soci­ ology of marriage as an institution, the psycholo­ gy of intimate relationships, and the nature of love and sexuality. Husband-wife roles studied in the light of Scripture and the movement toward egalitarian marriage. Attention given to the prob­ lems of divorce and remarriage, single parent, blended family and other current issues. MIN 815 THEOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS FOR PARENTING+ Development of a theologically consistent and psychologically healthy understanding of the pro­ cess of child rearing. Includes a critical review, both theologically and psychologically, of a num­ ber of current approaches to parenting. Class members responsible to I) formulate a compre­ hensive program of parent education for a local church, or 2) develop and conduct a parent edu­ cation seminar or workshop. MIN 817 BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES OF CHURCH RENEWAL* An examination of biblical principles for church life with the aim of spiritual and mission renewal. Course emphases will center on the pas­ tor's style of leadership, involvement and training of lay leaders, congregational creativity, impact­ ing the community, and preaching style and con­ tent, plus the pastor's and congregation's spiritual life. · MIN 819 WORLD MISSIONS AND THE LOCAL CHURCH* An overview and analysis of the development of mrld missions with emphasis on current specific mrld views. Issues such as self-supporting mis­ sions, hidden peoples and third world missionar­ ies will be explored, along with considerations on how to develop a world-view congregation. MIN 822 FAMILY LIFE EDUCATION + Acourse designed to lead the student through a biblical , sociological and educational investiga­ tion of family life education. Discovery of com­ mon elements of an effective family ministry in the church. Integration of this data with existing resources allows each person to develop a strategy A course designed to provide the pastor or Christian worker with a developmental approach to family living. Exposure to developmental life changes in persons and how change events in life - such as birth of a child, job change, death of parent - can affect marriage and family. (Re­ quired for all persons in Marriage and Family Ministries.) MIN 824 THE PASTOR'S SPIRITUAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH* + of family life education for his church. MIN 823 FAMILY LIVING FOR ALL SEASONS+ Acourse designed to examine the hazards of the ministry as they pertain to the mental and spiritual health of the pastor. The pastor assisted in identifying the area of potential personal weak­ ness and given resources for dealing with these problems. Attention given to aspects of the minis­ ter's role conflicts in his personal life, family life and ministry. Problem areas such as anger, de­ pression, assertiveness, leadership and relation­ ships will be explored. Techniques for self-modify­ ing behavior to grow spiritually and emotionally presented.

MIN 825 SMALL GROUPS: AN EXPRESSION OF THE BODY OF CHRIST* + Acourse focusing on birth, care and develop­ ment of biblical small groups as they function in the life of the local church. Philosophy of small group ministry explored with strategies for begin­ ning groups and maintaining them in the local church. Participants will learn how to train lay leaders, how small groups function effectively and will be able to set up a small group program in their ministry. MIN 826 DYNAMICS OF CHURCH GROWTH* A course designed to understand scientific principles developed to date in the field of church growth, to cover relevant contemporary literature on the subject and to acquire the basic skills necessary for diagnosing the health of the local church and designing programs for future growth. Course is designed to provide laboratory field experience in studying church growth. In­ volves direct research into growing churches in Southern California. (Additional mrk will be ex­ pected outside of class hours during the course.) MIN 827 INTEGRATION OF THEOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY IN ACOUNSELING MINISTRY+ An in-depth examination of various leaders and models of counseling in vogue today. Evalua­ tion of their success in integrating psychology and theology in counseling. Course is designed to assist the church leader to establish a lifestyle of integration as well as a philosophyof integration that will have practical expression in a counseling ministry in the local church. (Required for all persons in Marriage and FamilyMinistries.) MIN 828 PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING SKILLS + Acourse designed to help the pastor sharpen skills in pastoral care and counseling. The student will learn and practice a model of helping which incorporates techniques and approaches of the behavioral sciences as well as biblical principles. The student will be exposed to live counseling sessions, extensive counseling practice and professionals in practice. (Additional mrk will be expected outside of class hours during the course.) MIN 829 THE PASTOR AS ACRISIS COUNSELOR+ Student will develop skills to help individuals confronting typical crises such as the birth of a child, illness, the loss of a job, marital conflict, career adjustment, bereavement, pre-marital pregnancy, retirement and terminal disease. At­ tention given to prevention of stress in predictable developmental crises as well as recovery manage­ ment following a crisis. Acombination of clinical exposure, case study and student experience used in this seminar. MIN 830 ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP IN THE LOCAL CHURCH* Acourse designed to lead the student through a biblical, organizational and psychological under­ standing of leadership, motivation, planning, managing conflicts, mrker training, evaluation, change principles and organizational develop­ ment. Participants have the opportunity to exam­ ine their leadership style and to develop styles through group experiences and case studies that will make them more effective leaders.

MIN 833 DISCIPLESHIP IN THE LOCAL CHURCH* An in-depth examination of the biblical princi­ ples , history and methodology of discipleship. The course will emphasize the practical concern of how to develop an ongoing discipleship program in the local ministry. MIN 834 ADVANCED CHURCH GROWTH* An in-depth look at cross-cultural issues facing churches in the U.S.A. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the mosaic of culture both within the typical anglo churches and ethnic groups, as well as introducing the potential for church plant­ Adirected individual study whereby the student maydo advanced reading or research into an area of special interest. Aproposal must be prepared according to guidelines available in the D.Min. Office and approved by the D.Min. director.
