Each leave of absence must receive the approval of the student's advisor and the final approval of the Director of the Ed.D. program. The student will be required to paya Continu­ ation Fee for each semester he/she is not enrolled in the course work. Astudent who does not pay the Continuation Fee or the EDD 891 Dissertation Continuation course Fee is considered to have withdrawn from the program and must: 1) apply for re-admission to the program, 2) petition the Ed.D. Committee for approval of an original dissertation topic or submit a new dissertation proposal for topic and committee approval , and 3) paythe Continuation Fee or Dissertation Continuation Fee for the time of absence. (4) DISSERThTION STUDENTS: Dissertation (ABD) status students must cont inue to register and pay the required EDD 891 Dissertation Con­ tinuation course fees each semester (see fee schedule). If a student has completed the required units in dissertation research, the student must register for three additional units each semester until the dissertation is completed. PROGRAM SEQUENCE: (I) Aminimum of 60 units beyond the mas­ ter's degree of which at least 24 units must be completed within any given 24 months is required (12 units of dissertation credit are included in the 60 unit minimum total). Amaximum of any given eight units of appropriate doctoral level work from an accredited institution may be trans­ ferred. The student must maintain a 3.5 grade point average to continue in the program. (2) PROGRAM AGENDA: Awritten individual program agenda that includes proposed courses, emphasis, research tools and growth covenant must be submitted to the student's academic advi­ sor before the completion of I2 units. (3) PRELIMINARY ORAL INTERVIEW: All stu­ dents have an oral interview with a faculty com­ mittee to evaluate their progress and potential for successful completion of the doctoral program. This interview is scheduled after the completion of 24 units in the program. The results of this inter­ view are reported to the Ed.D. Committee which votes either for the student to continue, or contin­ ue with conditions, or not to continue in doctoral study. (4) VOCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Atotal of four years full-time Christian vocational experience as determined acceptable by the Ed.D. Committee is required prior to the granting of the Ed.D. degree. Previous experience applies. (5) QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS: To be taken in the last semester of coursework. Five written comprehensive examinations will be required covering: 1) History and Philosophy of Education, 2) Human Development, 3) Educational Theory and Process, 4) Theology and Spiritual Develop­ ment and 5) Research in Christian Education. These examinations will be given the third and fourth weeks of each semester. (6) RESEARCH TOOLS: Thi) research tools which provide research skills for the student's area of dissertation study are to be mastered. Validation of competency in each tool shall be determined by the Ed.D. Committee. Successful completion of certain courses may serve as research tools subject to acceptance by the student's academic advisor. Appropriate research tools include: I) biblical He­ brew language; 2) New Testament Greek lan­ guage; 3) modern German language; 4) statis-

International students are not required to take the GRE if English is not their native language and they do not hold degrees from an American college or university. Instead, they must submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Lan­ guage (TOEFL). (5) Submit completed profiles (not answer sheets) of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). These tests must be taken at a college testing service or from a licensed psychol­ ogist. Test material is confidential. Applicants are referred to the source from which the testing was administered if they desire clinical interpretation. The MMPI results must be less than 12 months old. (6) Submit five letters of recommendation on forms supplied by the school. Three of these letters are academic references and two are character references (one must be a pastor). The pastor and other character references shall provide confirma­ tion of spiritual qualification (I Timothy 3, Titus I) , sp iritual giftedness, relational skills and other ministry-related skills. (7) The applicant must submit awritten state­ ment (700-1000 words) describing vocational ob­ jectives and how the degree relates to those objec­ tives. (8) In addition to the application and refer­ ences, the applicant will submit a formal paper of at least 20 pages on a topic relating to Christian education which will reflect graduate level re­ search and writing skills. (9) The applicant must be interviewed by members of the Christian education faculty. If married, the applicant is to be accompanied by spouse, when possible. This interview, if required, will be scheduled toward the end of the applica­ tion process. Applicants will be notified if an interview is required. CLASSIFICATION OF ADMITTED STUDENTS Each student admitted is classified in one of the following categories. (I) FULL GRADUATE Sll\NDING: Applicants who intend to obtain a degree and who are admit­ ted without reservation are granted full graduate standing. Only students with full graduate stand­ ing may become degree candidates. (2) CONDITIONAL Sll\NDING Conditional admission status may be awarded to a student whose academic record shows certain deficiencies. The student must demonstrate ability to do grad­ uate work at a high level of achievement before being considered for admission to a degree pro­ gram. After completing two courses (or a semester of work), the record of a student with conditional standing will be reviewed by the graduate faculty serving the program. The faculty may then grant full graduate standing or request that the student should remain on conditional standing until specified requirements have been met. Condition­ al admission status may also be awarded to a student with deficiencies in the educational, the­ ological and vocational foundational require­ ments for admission. Astudent can take a maxi­ mum of 18 doctoral units before foundational admission requirements and positive review by the graduate committee serving the program will grant the student full graduate standing. (3) INACTIVE STUDENTS: Inactive students are those who have requested and been granted a leave of absence from the program. The Ed.D. degree is designed to provide its graduates with the academic foundation, theological perspective and skills needed to be highly competent professionals in Chris­ tian education, able to assume significant and distinctive leadership and teaching roles in the church and other institutions dealing with Christian education in a variety of settings, world-wide. Integration of faith learning and living is a major focus of the program. The program nurtures the competencies of sound scholarship, research, effective in­ terpersonal skills and teaching ability. Competence is combined with creativity and imagination enlightened by research-based knowledge. The doctoral program is de­ signed to stimulate the growth of each stu­ dent to be all that God intended in profes­ sional competence and in personal walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. Program Distinctives Holistic Focus: Research oriented with a strong emphasis in combining professional, social, spiritual and mental areas of growth. Teaching Skills: Emphasizes practical application of effective communication skills. Integration: "Faith, Learning, and Life" course is a core requirement. Throughout the program students will work with advising committee that will include a theology/Bible professor as well as Christian education staff. The dissertation itself must be integrative in nature. University Base:Awide breadth of knowl­ edge is made available through the faculty and various disciplines of study at Biola Uni­ versity. APPLICATION DEADLINE Applications must be submitted byFebruary 15 for fall entry or October 1 for spring entry. Appli­ cants accepted for the fall semester may begin studies in the preceding summer. Applicants ac­ cepted for the spring may begin studies in the preceding interterm. Decisions are made onlyon (I) Eligible applicants must hold a master's degree from an accredited institution with an average grade of at least 3.25 or a 4.0 scale. (2) PROGRAM REDUCTION: Students may re­ ceive a maximum 30 unit program reduction , with specific courses waived according to MA con­ centration. (3) VOCATIONAL FOUNDATION: All Ed.D. ap­ plicants must have a minimum of two years or equivalent of full-time Christian vocational expe­ rience, preferably within a church context. (4) Submit scores on the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE) .
