(7) ADVANCEMENT TO CANDIDACY: Upon the successful completion of all course work and the written comprehensive examinations, a student will be advanced to candidacy Upon reaching candidacy a student must register for EDD 891 Continuous Dissertation Research. (8) DISSERThTION COMMITTEE: Acommittee consisting of a research advisor and two or more additional faculty members drawn from Talbot School of Theology or other programs of Biola University shall be gathered by the student. Com­ mittee members are to include a professor from a biblical or theological field. The committee shall oversee and approve the student's dissertation proposal and dissertation. (9) DISSERThTlON: Adissertation evidencing high attainment in original scholarship must be submitted by all candidates within two years of the completion of the Qualifying Examinations. Ex­ tensions must be approved by the Ed.D. Commit­ tee. The dissertation topic and proposal must be approved by the candidate's advisory committee before gathering the empirical data. No later than three weeks prior to expected graduation the can­ didate must submit to the Ed.D. Director the original and four copies of the dissertation signed by the student's dissertation committee. Detailed guidelines are found in the Ed.D. Student Hand­ book. (10) ORAL DEFENSE OF DISSERThTION: The final examination is an oral defense of the disser­ tation before the student's doctoral committee and other invited professionals. CURRICULUM OUTIINE I. Emphasis: The student may develop a unique specialization from graduate courses offered across the university. The Christian Education department offers advanced elective courses in two areas: I. Spiritual Development Area The focus of this emphasis is on the integrative relationship between areas of human development and spiritual maturity. Sources for areas of hu­ man development are the research studies in the literature and the main source for spiritual devel­ opment is biblical. The emphasis is thus primarily integrative in its approach and scope. The belief that all truth is God's truth is central to this emphasis as "secular" studies are scrutinized for their relevance to the establishment and advance­ ment of spiritual maturity in the life of individ­ uals of all ages and in a family context. 830 Dev. Educational Processes Area This emphasis focuses on the educational pro­ cess in relation to the purpose of education, prin­ ciples of teaching, human growth, the nature of learning and the dynamics of groups in a variety of situations. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Core Courses (required) EDD 801 HISTORY OF BIBLICAL EDUCATION (2) History of the Christian Church 's education ministry traced through the educational ap­ proaches of the Hebrew nation , the early Chris­ tians, the Roman Catholic Church, the Protestant Reformation and the modern era of the church. Special attention given to the development history of certain agencies, such as the Sunday School , the Christian school movement and the history of current educational practices of the church, such as age-level ministries and professional , vocation­ al staff

EDD 802 PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (2) An advanced investigation of the western and eastern philosophical bases for the educational ministries of the church. The ways in which edu­ cational ideas and practices are shaped by philo­ sophical systems and specific philosophers dis­ cussed. (Prerequisite TCE 621 and 622 or permis­ sion of professor) EDD 803 HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND CHRISTIAN NURTURE (3) Principles and characteristics of life-span de­ velopment with particular attention to cognitive, moral , psychosocial , values - commitment, af­ fective , and physical developmental theories and research; investigation of relationships between developmental characteristics for nurture in the familyand in church-related ministries. (Prereq­ uisite TCE 550 or permission of professor) EDD 804 ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION AND LEADERSHIP (3) An investigation of current theories and princi­ ples of effective administration with an emphasis on the integration of administrative theory with theology Administrative and leadership patterns analyzed relating to the ministries of churches, parachurch agencies, and religious institutions. (Prerequisite TCE 615 or permission of professor) EDD 805 MODELS OF TEACHING (3) Alaboratory course for developing a repertoire of teaching skills and strategies based on several contemporary modes. Provides an opportunity for students to discuss issues and questions funda­ mental to teaching. (Prerequisite TCE 521 or permission of professor) EDD 806 INTEGRATION OF FAITH, LEARNING & LIFE (3) An investigation of models of integration which serve to incorporate the various disciplines of study appropriate to Christian education into an evangelical Christian theology in a consistent and Biblical fashion. Also to be considered are the broader implications of such an integration as the church interfaces with society as a whole. This required course will explore several areas and levels of integration in Christian education in order to introduce the nature and scope of the task to be continued in the student's choice of doctoral emphasis. Research Courses (required) EDD 880 DIRECTED RESEARCH (1-4) Individual study, directed reading or field re­ search into topic of student interest after at least 24 units have been completed. Such study must be done with the approval and supervision of a facul­ ty professor of record. The student is expected to submit a detailed course proposal and bibliogra­ phy on a learning contract form available from the admissions and records office. EDD 885 STATISTICAL ANALYSIS IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (3) Development of competency in using and in­ terpreting both descriptive and inferential statis­ tics as related to educational research. To enable the student to appropriately choose and compute various statistical packages, analyze the resultant data correctly, in Christian Education oriented research. Emphasis is given to the use of the computer in the computation of data and statisti­ cal application most relevant for the needs of Christian Educators. (Prerequisite TCE 633, 634 or a master's level course in research or test and measurements)
