Rooted in Nature

THE KOKUA HAWAI’I FOUNDATION

Jack Johnson, singer-songwriter and former professional surfer, once said, “I think it’s really important with kids just to show them the beauty of nature and teach them a profound respect for nature.” How true this is! Our world is our home and a beautiful place to explore and experience nature, life, and the great outdoors.

land. It’s a great way to get outdoors, give back to the community, and appreciate the beauty of our Earth. Whenever we have the opportunity, we make giant efforts to clean up nature, take care of wildlife, and preserve the environment.

When you think of recycling, you may think of the blue bins you use to recycle plastic, paper, cardboard, or glass. But did you know that you can also recycle electronics and other devices? Here are some statistics about electronic waste (e-waste). • Around 12% of our electronics are appropriately recycled each year. This means that over 80% of devices are put in the garbage or sent to Asia or Africa to be burned. However, burning these devices releases harmful toxins in the air that can affect us, other living organisms, and the environment. • The most hazardous electronic toxins are mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, chromium, and flame retardants. • E-waste is increasing yearly — we generate around 40 million tons worldwide. HOW TO PROPERLY RECYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

• Our cellphones are filled with precious metals such as gold and silver. The U.S. throws out $60 million worth of these metals each year. What electronic devices can you recycle? You can recycle computers, laptops, monitors, cellphones, TVs, radios, tablets, printers, and other devices. But that’s not all! You can also recycle air conditioners, heaters, microwaves, digital cameras, circuit boards, VCR/DVD players, calculators, and more. How can you reduce, reuse, and recycle these devices? If your electronics are still in good condition and function properly, you can donate them to friends, charities, or community outreach programs. Some cellular companies allow you to turn in your old phone when you buy a new one — and you can even get some money back if your phone isn’t in shambles! Just be sure your personal information and data are wiped from your devices before giving them away. You can also send your electronics to a specialized facility that will wipe your data and recycle your devices. Search online for electronic recycling in your area to find businesses and organizations that offer this service. However, ensure that whatever facility you use is environmentally friendly. So, the next time you upgrade to a new phone, tablet, or computer, or when you get a new microwave and other electronic devices, recycle or donate them! The environment will thank you for it.

O’AHU MARKET UPD

O’ahu Sales Activity From February to March of this year, the housing market in O‘ahu experienced a 36% surge in sales activity! However, compared to the same period (February to March) in 2022, year-over-year sales continued to decline, with a 26.5% drop for single-family homes and a 33.9% decline for condos. Despite this, March 2023 saw 236 single- family homes and 444 condos sold. O’ahu Median Sales Prices In 2023, median sales prices for March yielded mixed results when compared to a year ago, with single- family home prices declining by 5.8% from $1,150,000 in March 2022 to $1,083,750 in March 2023. However, condo median sales prices hit a new record high of $536,000, which is 0.4% higher than the previous record of $534,000 set in June 2022, and a 4% increase year-over-year. O’ahu Single-Family Home Sales Volume The majority of single-family home sales, at 58.5%, closed at $1,000,000 or higher, pushing the median sales price above $1 million. However, the $600,000 to $799,999 price range saw a year-over-year increase in sales volume, jumping 70.6% from 17 to 29 single-family home sales compared to the same time last year. The $800,000 to $999,999 price range accounted for over a quarter of sales in March 2023. What Does This Mean? O‘ahu’s real estate market is rapidly evolving, and the first quarter of 2023 was active despite year-over-year declines in some statistics. Although buyers may find advantageous conditions, such as fewer bid-ups and longer days on the market, prices are still high, which may motivate sellers to list their property.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain well and place macaroni in a large bowl (I like to use a Tupperware bowl with a lid so I can easily refrigerate later). 2. While macaroni is still hot, sprinkle on vinegar and add carrot and onion. Toss together until well combined. Refrigerate for 15 minutes, or until cooled. 3. In a separate, smaller bowl, whisk together mayo, milk, and sugar. Fold mayo mixture into the macaroni until all the noodles are evenly coated. Add salt and pepper. 4. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours (best overnight). Gently stir before serving, add a little more milk if needed, no more than a tablespoon or two.

4 What Are Family TikToks

TRY MAKING FAMILY TIKTOKS WANT TO BE TIKTOK FAMOUS?

For the third year in a row, TikTok was the most downloaded app in the world. While it first catered to a younger crowd, TikTok’s popularity has boomed since the pandemic began, and now people of all ages are getting in on the fun. TikTok has been installed over three billion times and has one billion active users every month. There are TikTok videos for every interest under the sun, but one category that’s seen a surge in popularity is family TikToks. If you haven’t stumbled across them before, you may be wondering; what exactly is a family TikTok? Well, it’s precisely what it sounds like. It’s a TikTok video that includes members of the entire family instead of one specific person. They may lip-sync, dance, play sports, share touching memories, and more through various TikTok videos. While it might seem like a niche genre, some families are finding great success with their TikTok videos.

There are several outstanding accounts to check out if you’re interested in seeing what family

TikToks are all about. The Holderness Family ( @theholdernessfamily ) is one of the first family TikToks to strike it big. They’re a North Carolina family who first found fame on YouTube with their “Xmas Jammies” video, which garnered over 15 million views. They’ve since moved into the TikTok space and regularly get hundreds of thousands of views on all of their videos. The Kabs Family ( @thekabsfamily ) is another channel worth subscribing to. Their comedy sketches and car karaoke will have you grinning from ear to ear. Now that you’re familiar with family TikToks, you’re probably wondering how your family can create popular content. You can use a few tricks to skyrocket your family toward viral

fame. First, try to be consistent with the themes and concepts of

your videos. It’ll be hard to gather a following if your videos are all over the place. Make sure you use trending music and hashtags, as they will help your videos get discovered by a wider audience. And be sure to engage with your audience. It’s not enough to simply have them watch your videos. Respond to comments, run polls, and answer questions during a Q&A to keep viewers entertained and engaged. You might not gain fame immediately, but it only takes one viral video to bring thousands of viewers to your page.
