Master ofMusic in Church Music

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants should hold a baccalaureate degree in music from an accredited or recognized institution and should have a3.0 grade point average (on a4.0 scale). College graduates without a m □ ior in music may be admitted to the program while removing any deficiencies through class study and private instruction. Eight units of Bible (including both Old Testament Survey and New Testament Survey) on the undergraduate level are required. If adeficiency exists, the applicant may take these studies (far zero graduate music degree credit) at Talbot School of Theology. Submit scores on the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE). This examination should be completed before the first semester of study and no later than the end of the first semester. International students and resident aliens whose first language is not English must take the Test of English as aForeign Language (TOEFL). Additional information may be found in this catalog under General University Admission, Registration and Graduation Requirements. All international student applicants should submit their applications at least six months in advance of the semester in which they intend to enroll. Music Qualifying Examinations will be given in written and aural theory, sight singing, piono proficiency, music history and conducting These qualifying examina­ tions are to be taken before the beginning of the semester in which the student enrolls. The applicant may complete the retesting of any deficient areas by the end of the eighth week of the semester. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS l Satisfactorily complete 38-39 semester units as outlined in the appropriate curriculum. 2. At least 24 units must be taken at the University, including Worship 501 3. Nine units of course work is considered full-time status, far all graduate students. 4. Obtain a 3.0 grade point average with no grade in any subiect in the music sections, below 3.0. Any such subject must be repeated. 5. The applicant's progress will be reviewed by the music faculty upon the completion of the fallowing courses: 501, 502 or 503, 533, 534, 535, 536, BE 515 and a biblical exposition elective. 6. The final project, far which there are no units, is to include a formal paper stating the student's personal philosophy of church music. Concurrent with the completion of the above paper will be an oral examination covering the fallowing topics: worship, church music in the United Stoles or music cultures of the world, and church music administration.

The Master of Music degree in church music is acomprehensive program of both concentrated studies and practical experience. The Master of Music degree in church music offers two distinct emphases; one for ministry in alocal church in the United States, and one for the musician planning a cross-cultural ministry. Since some churches and mission organizations do not have the financial resources ta warrant the hiring of afull-time minister of music, students enrolled in the Master of Music Degree program may wish to consider some studies in asecond area of ministry, such as: adult Christian education, youth or children's ministry, church school music education, private music teaching, composition/arranging, accounting or iournalism. OBJECTIVES The obiectives of the Master of Music Degree in Church Music are: l ) to promote the development of a personal philosophy of church music which integrates a biblical theology with a study of historical practice and current trends; 2) ta emphasize the priority of both individual and corporate worship as well as the need for revitalized congregational participation; 3) to creole an understanding of the purposes of church music far various cultural, age, and doctrinal groups; 4) to increase the awareness of the many available resources - literature, materials, organizations, and personnel; 5) to encourage further development of specific musical skills and to gain some knowledge ond competency in the areas of children/youth choirs, handbells, instrumental conducting, and music/arts; 6) to search out the sign ificant qualities of Christian leadership and the important techniques of effective communication and group dynamics; 7) to study biblical exposition and theology with seminarians at the Talbot School of Theology.
