COMMENCEMENT All degree requirements must be completed before the student may participate in commencement ceremonies. Those who complete their degree requirements during interterm or summer session must register in a nonresident status for the following semester, with graduation scheduled at the time of the next commence­ ment. In such cases no tuition is charged. It is expected that all graduating students will be present at commencement ceremonies except in cases of extreme emergency or other similarly difficult circumstances. Writing Competency Exam Biol □ University agrees with the current emphasis in American higher education on the need far college graduates to be able to express themselves appropriately and effectively in writing. The skills learned in ENG 110 Criticism 8. Composition need to be practiced to be maintained, not only as ameans of communication, but as a means of learning as well; therefore, Biol □ encourages the use of writing whenever possible in eveiy discipline throughout the student's undergraduate career. At o minimum of one year otter toking ENG 110 A 8. Band at least three semesters before graduation - preferably during the first semester of the junior year - each student must take and pass the Writing Competency Exam (WCE) to confirm that writing skills have been maintained. Students who do not pass the exam should as soon as possible avail themselves of one of the following options for achieving competency: (1) Take advantage of individual or group tutoring opportunities in the Writing Lab in Sutherland Hall, Room 211, in preparation for re-taking the exam. The student will pay afee of S25 for re-toking the WCE. If option l is chosen and the WCE is failed the second time, the student must take option 2. (2) Enroll in ENG 110 Writing for Competency. Agrade of C + or better in this course will fulfill competency requirements. Students ore expected ta complete the ENG 110 A 8. Brequirement in their first year at Biol □. Neither the Writing Competency Exam nor ENG 210 can be substituted for the ENG 110 requirement. l. All baccalaureate degrees require aminimum of 130 semester units of credit for graduation. Each major consists of a minimum of 30 units of which 24 must be upper division. The Bachelor of Music degree requires 140 units. A degree in biological science requires 135 units and nursing, 142 units. For specific major requirements please see indicated major listings. 2. Writing competency is arequirement of graduation for all students who enter the university as freshmen beginning with fall semester 1986 and who will be graduating in 1989-90 or later. Writing competency is arequirement for graduation for all incoming transfer students who will be graduating in 1989-90 or later. The first administration of the exam will be in 1988-89. 3. Completion of all academic requirements and approval of the student's gradua­ tion petition by the major advisor and the director of records a year before graduation. 4 Aminimum of thirty units must be token at Biol □ University, including at least fiheen units (upper division level) in the major field Extension credit or credit by examination may not be used to fulfill the minimum residence requirement of 30 semester units. Students desiring a minor, see paragraph above on minors. 5. A"C" average (or a2.00 grade point average) is required on all work taken at Biol □ University and within the major field. 6. All course work during the final semester which will be applied toward graduation requirements must be taken at Biol □ University. REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL BACCALAUREATE DEGREES 7. All correspondence course work must be completed and an official transcript received by the office of admissions and records before the senior year, or two semesters prior to graduation. Special Note: All graduation requirements may be met within four school years by carrying approximately 16 or 17 units each semester. Astudent may still be graduated within four years if he wishes to take alighter load and will enroll in summer session and/or interterm. REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL GRADUATE DEGREES See individual degree programs for specific requirements for graduation. 1.
