Would you turn down a $450-a-da,y job and a chance to win the title ofMiss America in order to attendBio/a?

Brenda Kutz did. In 1977, Brenda declined the opportunity to represent Wash ington State in the Miss America pageant, moving instead to California to study music at Biola University. The decision to pass up the Miss America Pageant surprised some who knew Brenda; her pursuit of a career in music did not. At 18 years of age, Brenda had alreadydirected a 90-person choir that won first-place honors in the state of Washington , as well as a 20-person vocal ensemble that placed second in the nation. She also performed with her own vocal and instrumental groups.

While studying at Biola, Brenda received job offers from several secular singing groups-one of which was willing to pay her $450 a day. For manystudents-especially those striving for perfection as a performer- the offer would have been a dream come true. Brenda turned it down. According to Brenda, she looked beyond these unusual oppor tunities to concentrate on being a student because, she said, "I realized that Biola was where God wanted me to be." Acknowl edging that nothing beats being in the will of God she added, "I still have plans for a professional career in music . But if God leads in other directions, I'm always willing to follow."
