FINANCIAL INFORMATION
GRADUATE FINANCIAL AID Before applying, applicants should make realistic assessment of their resources for financing graduate study in view of the graduate tuition and fee schedule and the cost of living in Southern California. The university cannot provide guarantee of financial assistance for first year students. The following federal aid programs ore available to graduate students. Please refer to the appropriate sect ion above for additional information. Notional Direct Student Loon Guaranteed Student Loon College Work Study. In addition, the following aid programs ore available specifically for graduate study. California State Graduate Fellowship - Available to state residents only; requires a financial statement, eligibility application and GRE or other appropriate test scores. RSP (Graduate)Assistantships -Available to selected second year students and above; eligibility requirements and use of funds is established through Rosemead faculty committees. Minority Fellowships - Available to qualified Rosemead students on the basis of need. Requires a Financial Statement (FAF) and Graduate Aid Application. Graduate Grants - Available in limited amounts to students who demon strate a financial need; requires on FAF and Graduate Aid Application. Preference is given to students who hove completed one or more years of graduate study. GENERAL FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION The following apply to both undergraduate and graduate aid applicants. Entitlement Aid Biol □ University is authorized as on institution to grant benefits to veterans and dependents of veterans, social secu rity benefits and assistance from the California Rehabilitation Program. Students interested in this type of aid should contact the office of admissions and records. If on applicant is a non-California resident but a resident of the United States, he/she may obtain Q loon through his/her state's Higher Education Loon Program, by contacting aparticipating bank in his/her home area. If his/her state participates in the GSL program, he/she may contact a bank in his/her community. Short Term Loans Biol □ University hos certain revolving funds which ore used for short-term student loons. Astudent may borrow up to $500 per year (for emergency purposes); the loon is interest free, the only charge being a nominal service fee of $2.00 per $100 borrowed. In general, these ore reserved for students whose needs ore of a short duration as the entire amount must be repaid before each foll semester begins unless a renewal for one year hos been granted. These loons ore generally not available for non-educational expenses, such as purchase of cars, As funds ore available, Student Aid Grants ore mode to needy students from the Student Aid Fund. This fund is maintained by gifts from friends of the university. Students ore not required to repay the university, but it is hoped that recipients will contribute to the fund when they hove completed school in order to provide for marriage expenses, etc. Student Aid Grants International applicants must establish the degree of their ability to meet the costs of on education at Biol □ University. Each internat ional applicant must submit a signed statement of financial responsibility as well as signed statements from any agencies or individuals who hove token the responsibility of underwriting the student's expenses. These statements must include the exact amount of the commitment. ·student Employment The university maintains on employment office for the benefit of students needing port-time work to defray expenses. While this office does not guarantee employment, it does make on effort to place every student desiring work. Jobs ore available both on and off campus, according to students' ability, others who ore in need. International Students
Under the National Dired Student Loan Program, ostudent may borrow up to $3,000 in his first two years of study and $6,000 by the end of his first undergraduate degree. Repayment of NDSL begins six months ofter graduation or withdrawal from school. If the total amount is paid within six months of graduation, interest will be accrued. Payments may be extended over a ten-year period at five percent interest on the unpaid balance. Members of the armed forces on active combat duty and students who transfer to other schools to complete undergraduate or graduate work, may defer payment and interest and extend the repayment period. Guaranteed Student Loans (GSL) ore available through local banks, credit unions and savings and loon associations, for citizens and nationals of the United States, or those in the country for other than a temporary purpose. · It is the lender's option to make or deny the loon. Banks may require a deposit relationship. The program allows students to borrow up to $2,500/yeor as undergraduates, but some lenders may hove lower limits. Applications for GSL may be obtained from the office of student financial services. The student may defer payment until the sixth month ofter graduation. Interest is charged at a rote of eight percent per year and the student hos ·up to ten years to repay the loon. Nursing Loans (up to $ 1,500 per year) ore available to declared nursing majors. The interest on these loons is six percent. Payment may be extended over a ten-year period. California Loans to Assist Students (CLAS} is a new student loon program authorized in 1984. Graduate students, independent students and parents may borrow up to $3,000 annually. at 12 percent. Repgyment begins 60 days ofter the loon is mode. Student borrowers enrolled full time may defer principal until their status changes. State Aid Cal Grant A's ore mode available to hundreds of California residents each year. Eligibility is based on G.P.A. and financial need. In addition, several students from low income families receive funds through the Col Grant BProgram. Students attending Biol □ ore not eligible to receive funds through the Col Grant C program. Institutional Aid Bio/a Scholarships include academic, honor, and presidential awards. Academic: $200 to $1,500. 3.3 G.P.A. required and SAT scores of at least 800 or equivalent ACT scores; based upon ocodemic achievement and financial need. Honor: One-half tuition annually. 3.85 G.P.A. required for entering freshmen and SAT scores of at least 1000 or equivalent ACT; 3.60 G.P.A required for continuing Biol □ students based upon ocodemic achievement. President's Award: Full tuition. Senior standing with intention to graduate at the end of the school year required, along with a minimum 3.60 G.P.A., attendance at Biol □ for ot least two years as well as personal qualifications. Music Awards, ranging from $300 to $1,400 ore mode by the music deportment to music majors with high-performance and scholastic capabilities. The scholarship must be used for the area in which the applicant auditioned. Recipients may also be required to participate in on ensemble activity. Two specially designated scholarships ore open to organ and composition majors on on annual competition basis. These prestigious awards, equal to the highest scholarship granted, ore The Rayner Brown Scholarship for Composition, and The Timothy Howard Scholarship for Organ. Athletic Scholarships ore offered to students who demonstrate outstanding ability and achievement in a particular sport. Forensics Scholarships ore offered to participants on the school's competitive speechteam. Students awarded this scholarship ore not necessarily communication majors. Biological Science pre-med scholarships up to $500 per semester ore available to upper division biological science majors. The scholarship is based on need and pre-med potential. Application forms available from the pre-med advisory committee, deportment of biological science. In addition to those offered by the school, other scholarships ore provided through the generosity of donors.
