I thought there was no way Zorro couldget out ofthat mess/ but it wasn't absolutely no way.

Excerptedfrom an address delivered by Biota University President, Dr. Clyde Cook, at last fall's Convocation.

As I think back on mychildhood, I remember go ing to the matinee on Saturday to see "The Adventures of Zorro." In the adventure I remember best, Zorro was thrown into a dungeon where one wall was covered with long spikes. Suddenly the wall began to move. The camera panned Zorro 's panicky face , then back to the spikes. There was no way out-just solid rock around Zo rro with the spikes getting closer and closer. But when the spikes were two inches from Zorro's chest, he reached up and grabbed one. It was a lever! Atrap door opened and Zorro slid down a chute and landed right on his horse waiting at the bottoml I thought there was no way Zorro could get out of that mess; but it wasn't absolutely no wav. The Apostle Paul describes a similar situation in 2 Corinth i ans 4:8 when he talks about being "perplexed, but not in despair." Several years ago, fo rmer Biola president J. Richard Chase pointed out to me that "perplexed" is a compound word meaning, basically, "no way" When Paul uses another com pound wo rd that intensifies the meaning, he is actually saying: "No way, but not absolutely no way."

Why is it never absolutely no way? Because God is in control and we are identified with Him. We maybe troubled but we need not be distressed; we may be persecuted but we 're not forsaken; we can be cast down but we 're not destroyed. "Ah , Lord God! Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee." Oer. 32: 17). Are you facing impossible situations today? There may be a "no way" situation in your family. Perhaps there 's "no way" you can get victory over a troublinghabit. How about paying for your education here at Biola, or attempting a Christian service assignment that's not a safe , easy one? I want to remind you- as well as myse lf- that God indwells us and can turn "no way" into "not absolutely no way." For seventy-eight years God has used Biola to impact theworld for Jesus Christ , bringing us safely through many "crises" to do so. And as Dr. Sam Sutherland recently said, "Our best days are still ahead." We 've learned that the potential here at Biola is great , but we' ll never realize it unl ess we step out byfaith. When we do , God can see us through even the most difficult "no way" situation. He ' ll do the same for you.
