Steketee, M.F.A., Chair Faculty Associate Professor: Zamoro Assistant Professors: Krommes, Steketee Instructor: Weir Objectives: The art department seeks to aid in the development of men andwomen for the life and production of the artist; to provide guidance in the development of a biblical phi losophy of art that relates to the person, his Creator and in turn, to the Y,mld. Upon completion of the art major, t~e student should have begun to develop an adequate foundational understanding of various areas of ex­ pression: in areas of studio arts, graphicdesign and art education. Through development of skills, philos­ ophy and historical perspectives of art, the B i o l □ graduate shouldbe prepared for postgraduate study or a career in art in either secular or Christian related enterprises. Majors : A Bachelor of Arts degree requinng 54 semester hours in ort is offered with emphasis in studio orts, graphic design and ort education. Studio arts and art education emphasis majors must complete a basic coreof 36 units of ort: 101, 102, 107, 108, 110, 111, 210, 211, 212, 213, 311 ond 315. Specific additional require­ ments for these degree options ore: Studio Arts: 18 units 304, 305, 308, 310, 400 level ort electives (6 units) ond 460. Art Education: 9 units 304, 306, 310 Graphic Design emphasis majors must complete the follow­ ing: 101, 102, 107, 108, 110, 111 ,203,212,213,221, 310, 311, 312, 313, 315,322,419,420 ond 460. NOTE: Completion of ort mojar fulfills the general educotion requirement for fine orts. Department Minor: The student must complete lower division courses 100, 107, 110 ond six units of electives, plus six units of upper division courses totaling 21 units. l 00 ART APPRECIATION (3) An introduction ta the history of ort criticism and aesthetics; a visual analysis of mrks of ort; comparative -studies on selected pnntings ond sculptures. Fee $10. l 01 ART HISTORY I (3) Survey of ancient to medieval ort; emphasis on mrks of architecture, sculpture, painting and their significonce in general mrld culture. l 02 ART HISTORY II (3) Historicol and cultural consideration of visual ort horn the Renaissance to the 19th century. l 04 CRAFTS (3) Introductory studies in various forms of hondicrofts, including silk screening, textiles, stained glass, leather ond weaving. Fee: $20. l 07 DRAWlNG I (3) An introduction to drawing, perspective, line, shape, value texture ond composition. Fee: $15.

l 08 DRAWING II An introduction to fundamentals of drawing the human figure horn gesture to finished mrk. Emphasis on shape, form, value, structure ond individual expression. Fee: $15. 110 DESIGN I (3) Abasic foundation course to establish visual design concepts. This course examines elements and principles of two-dimensional design. Fee: $15. 111 THREE-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN (3) Basic techniques in three-dimensional form. Instruction in­ cludes preporotion of drawings, models and construction. Fee: $15. 130 INTRODUCTION TO STUDIO ARTS (3) Astudy of the primary histoncol stylistic periods of man's mrk in the visual orts. Classroom experience will allow for hands-on experiences in mrking with ovariety of moteriols in both 2-D ond 3-D media. Fee: $15. 203 ILLUSTRATION (3) Exploration of various illustration moteriols ond techniques. For advertising design major. Fee: $15. 207 LITTERING (3) Offered dunng interterm only. Basic styles of lettering; practice in pen and brush lettering; display signs and manuscript projects. No prerequisite. For non-majors. Fee: $15. 210 SCULPTURE I (3) Abasic course that teaches sculpture os on artistic expression. Instruction includes welding, fobricotion, forging ond simple mold­ making techniques. Prerequisite: 111 or consent. Fee: $25. 211 CERAMICS I (3) Abasic introduction to day and glaze techniqueswhich will be designed to introduce wheel-throwing in the following semesters. Hand-building techniques ond the aesthetics of ceramic design will be the emphasis. No prerequisite. Fee: $25. 212 PRINTMAKING I (3) Introduction to intaglio printmaking techniques. Studio prob­ lems in platemaking and printing. Prerequisite: 107. Fee: $15. 213 PAINTING I (3) Basic color theory and painting techniques. Traditional ta contemporary styles will be explored. Prerequisite: 107 or consent. Fee: $20. 221 PHOTOGRAPHY I (3) Experience in fundamentals of black ond white photography covering both creative and technicol aspects. Fee: $30. Prerequisite: 211 or consent. Fee: $25. 305 SCULPTURE II (3) Emphasis is placed on independent creativity ond new op­ prooches covering wide range of media ond methods with o concentration on the formation of ideas ond their interpretations. Prerequisite: 210 or consent. Fee: $25. 306 ELEMENTARY ART WORKSHOP (3) Developing and preparing ort projectssu itable for elementary school pupils. Prerequisite: Core requirements. Fee: $25. 307 DRAWING Ill (3) Drawing problems emphasizing figure drawing, but including total light ond space environments. Fee: $15.

308 PAINTING II (3) Concentration on developing imaginative resources of the individual through the use of oils and acrylics. Color, shape, image, visual, ideas and techniques ore covered. Prerequisite: 213 or consent. Fee: $l 5 310 PRINTMAKING II (3) Introduction to lithography. Direct drawing on stone with crayon and tusche. Prerequisite: 212 or consent. Fee: $15. 311 20TH CENTURY ART HISTORY (3) The history of pointing, sculptureond architecture horn 1890 to 1970. Major aesthetic issues thot shaped 20th century ort will be examined. 312 TYPOGRAPHY (3) Abasic course in the proper use of type application, typo­ graphical texture, integration ond copy fitting. Prerequisite: Core requirement. Fee: $15. 313 INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN I (3) Introduction to design principles, communicotion and skills in graphic ort design os applied to visual communicotion. Prerequi­ site: Core requirement. Fee: $l 5. 315 CONTEMPORARY ART TRENDS (3) A study of ort produced since 1970, focusing on current movements within the international ort community Fee: $25. 322 PHOTOGRAPHY II (3) Further study in technique of block ond white and introduction to color photography covering creative ond technicol aspects. Fee: $15. 410 SEMINAR IN ART (l-6) Independent study in meas of concentration under faculty direction with emphasis in history, studio ond creative research. Prerequisite: Consent. Seminars may be repeated. Fee: $15. 411 CERAMICS Ill (3) Advanced cloy forming and glaze formulation will be studied including sculptural forms in cloy ond dinnerware production.
