Humanities Major The departments of communication, English, foreign languages, history and phi­ losophy offer an interdepartmental major in humanit ies. It consists of an 18 unit con­ centrat ion in one area and two support areas of six upper division units each. The area of concentration is basically an em­ phasis in the desired field but offers more flexibility through advisement of the sub­ ject department Objective: The objective of the human­ ities major is to provide the student with a broader perspect ive in selected liberal arts disciplines than is possible with a si ngle sub­ ject matter. Courses taken to sat isfy the general education requirement cannot be credited to the major. General Information Humanities 230 INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (7) The shaping of human culture and thought to contemporary times, using a team­ taught approach integrating History I00 with participating general education offer­ ings. Value of credits released is equal to that of the courses if taken separately Humanities 230E: History I00, English 250 (7 units) Human ities 230P History I00, Philosophy 202 (7 units). Humanities Major: Classical Studies Concentration: A 30 unit concentrat ion in class ical studies. A major concentration of 18 upper division units in Greek and 6 un it minor concent ra­ tions in two of the following: history, phi­ losophy or rhetoric. Possibil ities include Ancient History 323, 324, Philosophy 30 I , 302 or Rhetoric English 450, Communica­ t ion 383 English 350 - Greek/Latin Roots is required as a support course. Geography 30 I INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY (3) World cu ltural regions: isolation of cu ltural forces and their interact ion with the phys­ ical environment to produce the varieties of cul tural landscape: populat ion distribu­ tion, general land-use, settlement pattern, transportation and communication. 310 STUDIES IN GEOGRAPHY (3) Conti nental areas studies by regions em­ phasizing physical, cultural, economic and historical dimensions which give geograph­ ic personality to individual regions and na­ tions. One or more sections offered each year in areas such as Lat in America, Nor-th America, Europe and Asia. May be repeat­ ed with different content (section title).
