Focus on conversion , revelation, communication, transforma­ tion, indigeneity and other related topics. *511 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLINGUISTICS (2) Study of the interrelationships of language and society in areas such as folklore , worldview, bilingualism, personality, classi­ fications and other topics. 515 MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM (4) The nature of Christian outreach: a study of principles , history , and methodology in evangelism on personal, local church and worldwide levels. 521 DYNAMICS OF THE RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE (2) A treatment of conceptions of the supernatural, the function of religion in society, religion and social control, the nature of religious ritual and paraphernalia, sacred places and religious practitioners. *525 SEMANTICS (2) Considerations of meaning in language with special reference to words and concepts in relation to semantic domains, componen­ tial features of meaning, case roles and implications for cross­ cultural communication. 530 INTERPERSONAL AND CROSS-CULTURAL ADJUSTMENT (2) Issues relating to intercultural living with focus on personal and interpersonal adjustments with nationals and other missionaries; language, value conflicts, status and role, culture shock, stereotypes, cultural limitations and related topics . 541 APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY (2) Application of anthropological insights to cross-cultural prob­ lems . Emphasis on: marriage customs, leadership patterns, poli­ tical relations , indigenous movements, culture change , world view, etc. Prerequisite:·JOO. 542 CULTURE CHANGE . (2) The study of how cultures change, the dynamics and processes of change , the place of change agents and the speed and intensity of change. Implications of such processes are examined in social, political , economic and religious aspects of society. Prerequisite: 541. 551 INTRODUCTION TO CHURCH GROWTH (4) A basic understanding of church growth concepts as related both to the local congregations and to the task of worldwide evange­ lization, with due emphasis on the church growth school of thought. 554 PRINCIPLES OF CHURCH PLANTING (2) A study of the Biblical mandate to establish local churches among all of the peoples making up mankind. Special emphasis on intercultural church planting among the unreached peoples of Asia, Africa , Latin America and the ethnic minorities of the western world. 558 WORLD RELIGIONS (2) The distinctive features of the historical ethnic religions , with special emphasis on their comparison and encounter with Christi­ anity and their bearings upon missionary strategies.

cross cultural (and cross subcultural) ministries they will face in today's multi-ethnic and multi-national world, especially as these impact the local church (e.g., sponsoring refugees, multi-ethnic local churches , city-bred ministers called to rural churches and vice-versa). (4) To develop research professionals in linguistics, Bible translation, anthropology, church growth, etc. , to aid in and support the missionary enterprise. (5) To help prepare nation­ als of every nation for formal educational service in their own culture; and to prepare educators and scholars from every nation at the very highest levels of education to teach in schools of higher learning . (6) To serve as consultants to national and international educational and developmental institutions and agencies and to both complete and check Bible translation. DEGREE PROGRAMS The Master ofArts Degrees: All applicants must have graduated from an accredited college with a minimum grade point average of 2.6 (on a 4.0 scale). Those from approved non-accredited colleges must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to be granted acceptance without provisions. All must submit a written statement outlining their vocational objectives and how the degree will relate to those objectives . A student must have at least a 2.75 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to graduate. The Master ofArts in Intercultural Studies: The Master of Arts in intercultural studies is designed for those anticipating cross­ cultural involvement and consists of a core requirement of 18 units, including ICS 502,511 , 521,542 and 572; a Bible and theology requirement of 9 units. Electives from missions course­ work of six units and other electives. The total number of units required for the completion of the degree is 42. The qualified student may graduate with as few as 32 units at least 24 of which must be taken at this school. Students with little or no preparation in intercultural studies may be required to take ICS 300, 311 and 530 early in their program of studies. A comprehensive examina­ tion over one's coursework will be required before graduation. The Master ofArts in Missions: The Master of Arts in missions is designed for those who are already in an intercultural missions situation. It will make available academic updating for fur­ loughing missionaries, nationals, and those involved in service to missions. A minimum of two years in intercultural missionary service or equivalent is prerequisite. The program consists of a core requirement of 25 units, including ICS 500, 515, 541, 551 , 558, 572, 644 and 704; a Bible and theology requirement of 26 units, including BE 505, 506, 518 and 603 and Th 605, 606 and 709; and electives. The total number of units required for completion of the degree is 62. The student with qualified undergraduate strength, however, may graduate with fewer units, though in no case fewer than 32, of which at least 24 units must be taken at this school. The student must present an acceptable thesis prior to graduation. Prerequisites: ICS 300 or 500 is prerequisite to all coursework for mission majors only.
