312 322 40 I and either 470 or 45.0 and a minimum of two units of l~wer 'division electives and 14 units of upper division elec tives. Eighteen units of supporting sciences including Chemistry I 05, 106 and 301. The eight units of general education science requirement are met if at least three units of math are completed within the major requirements. Professional education courses required by the department of education are 300, 330, 425 and 435. BIOLOGICAL EDUCATION (ELEMENTARY) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE The biology and supporting physical science requirements are the same as those for the secondary education program. OUTDOOR EDUCATION (SECONDARY) REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE Biology requirements are 24 units including 100 , 110 , 262, 290 and a minimum of four units of lower division electives (211 or 222) and 1O units of upper division electives (from 301 ,333 , 352, 401,440 , 450). Twelve units of supporting physical science and math are required including Chemistry 101 , 102 and six units of electives. Twenty-two units of required recreation and camp administration courses include RCA 100, 110 , 172, 180 , 220 , 340,401,450,460. The eight units of general education science requirement are met by the completion of the major if at least three units of math are completed within the major requirements. Professional education courses required by the department of education are 300 , 330 , 425 and 435. Department Minor: 20 units, 14 of which must be u~per divi sion. The core curriculum is recommended unless spec1f1c needs dictate otherwise. Specific minor requirements are to be approved by a departmental advisor. The general education requirement for a foreign language for those following a biology major may be met by two years of high school language or the first four units of a college language. Curriculum charts for biology , pre-med , health related , education and outdoor education may be obtained in the departmental office: Science Hall , Room 113. Also available is a course sequence schedu le listing when alternate year courses will be offered. Most laboratory courses in biological science have a $20 labora tory fee. VOCATIONAL SCOPE The biological science major is intended to have strength in the foundations of mathematics , physics and chemistry. Breadth in the major areas of biology is included in the core curriculum to serve as a base for advanced or more specialized study. The scope of the core curriculum emphasizes the principles of biology in all forms of life. The biological science major is intended to prepare students for the following: (I) further study in the health related fields (medic ine, dentistry , medical technology , physical ther apy, physician assistant , veterinary medicine , pharmacy); (2) further study in the teaching fields (college, nursing , health sciences); (3) graduate study in general biology or a specific area within biology (zoology, botany and microbiology); (4) terminal study in primary or secondary education; (5) biology_ applied to agriculture, business, missions ; and (6) camp admm1strat1on / naturalist, out-door educator. 46

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS High school requirements are; one year chemistry , one year physics and three years mathematics. One year of biology is desirable. Deficiencies can be fulfilled with permission from the department of biological science. Admission to the outdoor education major is by written application , a paper from the student and a personal interview. 100 BIOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES - LECTURE (3) Unifying principles of biology with emphasis on human organ systems, eco logy and principles of genetics. Not open to biology majors except those with an emphasis in outdoor education. 110 OBSERVATIONAL BIOLOGY - LABORATORY (2) Observational and investigative approach to biological processes; partial survey of microorganisms , plants and animals. Three hours laboratory , one hour lecture / discussion . Prerequisite: 100 (preferably taken concurrently). Laboratory fee: $20. 111 GENERAL BIOLOGY (4) Introductory majors course dealing with principles of cell and molecular biology, genetics, natural selection and ecology. Laboratory emphasis on investigative approach and experimental techniques of current day biology. Three hours lecture, four hours laboratory. Laboratory fee: $20. 120 CURRENT TOPICS IN BIOLOGY (3) Selected topics of current popular interest and concern in the areas of environment, human biology , disease , nutrition and ecology. 130 SEMINAR IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE ( 1-2) Directed research (literature or laboratory) in selected areas of biology with written and / or oral presentations by students; in tended to stimulate inquiry and creative thought. May be used for general education science requirements . 211 INYERTEBRATEBIOLOGY (4) Taxonomy and morphology of invertebrate animal phyla; labora tory dissection of invertebrates. Insect collection required . Three hours lecture, four hours laboratory. Prerequisite: 100 or 111 . Laboratory fee: $20. 221 MICROBIOLOGY (4) Beneficial and pathogenic significance of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa , viruses); identification , control and methodology. Laboratory fee: $20. 222 BOTANY (4) The study of the organs , tissues , functions and responses to environment of typical flowering plants and the morphology and life history of the major plant groups. Some classification of local forms is included and a plant anatomy project is required using the scanning electron microscope. Three hours lecture , four hours laboratory . Prerequisite: I 00 or I I I . Laboratory fee: $20. 262 NATURAL HISTORY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (4) Common plants and animals of southern California emphas izing those eas il y observed and collected. Life history , identification and ecological relationships of local forms stressed. Man's im pact and usage of the southern California ecosystem.
