An 18 unit concentration in literature , of which 12 must be upper division (selection· of the literature concentration must be made from the literature listing , including six units of English 250 , English Literature) . Advisement through the English department. Foreign Language Concentration. A concentration is offered in Greek and Spanish only and consists of 12 upper division units. Two support areas of six upper division units each chosen from the options listed below. Total for major, 30 units , of which 24 must be upper division. Advisement through the department of foreign languages . History Concentration. An 18 unit concentration in history (beyond the general education level) of which 12 units must be upper division. Two areas of six upper division each chosen from the support area options listed below. Total for major , 30 units , of which 24 must be upper division . Advisement through the history department. Philosophy Concentration. An 18 unit concentration in philoso­ phy , of which 12 must be upper division , including 301 and two of the following courses: 302 , 303 , 404. Support Area Options for Humanities Major: Two support areas of six upper division units each are necessary for the major. The following are the area options: communication, English language 350, German, Greek, literature, philosophy, Spanish and history.

The departments of communication, English , foreign languages, history and philosophy offer an interdepartmental major in hu­ manities. It consists of an 18 unit concentration in one area and two support areas of six upper division units each. The area of concentration is basically a emphasis in the desired field but offers more flexibility through advisement of the subject depart­ ment. Objective: The objective of the humanities major is to provide the student with a broader perspective in selected liberal arts disci­ plines than is possible with a single subject matter. Courses taken to satisfy the general education requirement cannot be credited to the major. GENERAL INFORMATION Humanities 230 INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES (7) The shaping of human culture and thought to contemporary times , using a team-taught approach integrating History 100 with participating general education offerings. Value of credits re­ leased is equal to that of the courses if taken separate! y. Humanities 230E: History 100, English 250 (7 units) Humanities 230P: History 100, Philosophy 202 (7 units). HUMANITIES MAJOR: Classical Studies Concentration: A 30 unit concentration in classical studies , of which 21 must be upper division. The general education foreign language requirement is to be met by either Greek , Latin or Hebrew. Philosophy 301, History 323 or 324 and English 420 , Studies in Comparative Literature: Greek and Ro­ man Literature are required . The balance of the major is to be structured with courses from the following: at least six additional units in language (Greek , Latin or Hebrew) ; and six units from Philosophy 302 , History 304 , 313 , 314 , 323 , 324 or 430.
