ORTHMAN-SOUTH AFRICA FERTILIZER PLACEMENT STUDY Purpose: Evaluate importance of early placement of nutrients for early vigor, improved root development, setting a higher potential yield, sustainable plant growth all season long and better water usage of the soil profile. To demonstrate how strip tillage can accomplish all of this.

STAGE V-4, 18 TH DECEMBER 2020 We were seeing important differences in root dimension
Within the first two weeks after planting the corn, plant health and root development shows how the root system was better developed to sustain itself long into the season.
ROOT COUNT 21-1-21 Each and every corn root out of the 60 potential roots in a corn root system has great value to biomass production and yield potential.

LET’S LOOK AT SOME IN-FIELD DATA
Throughout the first 50 days of plant growth we noted some differences that correlated later with harvest.
In Season Data from Placement Study
Field measurements up to the V9 stage indicate that properly placed nutrients after V2-V3 stage the plants excelled over where no nutrients were used (see blue bars). At V8 stage the corn plant sets the number of kernel numbers in circumference of the ear. We, at Orthman believe placed nutrition can set the yield potential early.

Nearby Tillage Trial Data • To review: looking from start to V12 (tassel time) with the plots where we compared tillage differences; strip till continued to show improvements in plant growth all season long. • Broadcast fertilizer was applied then tillage applications were completed.

In a rain fed system, capturing rain and providing for faster infiltration in reduced tillage systems is of great importance. Every mm of rain that runs off, ponds and later evaporates is a loss for growth and yield.
YIELD RESULTS FROM NEARBY TILLAGE TRIAL

QUICK SUMMARY OF WHAT WE LEARNED • Nutrient placement in pre-plant tillage operation gave respectable positive results • All season long the positive placed nutrition had effects: o Better root development, both depth and number of roots o Better water utilization of rain and soil profile moisture to deeper depths o Improved plant growth and development all season • In the tillage comparison trials o Water intake is better in conservation tillage operations o Plant growth was slightly improved in the strip till portion of the trial o Yields (strip tilled) were very comparable to the plough system o Cost analyses would show the 0.3T/ha strip till yield was most likely better or the same as the plough system
