Objectives: The communication major offers concentrations in speech pathology, print mass media, radio-television-film, drama, and speech communication . An additional option is the interdisciplinary major in communication studies. In each of these, the department attempts to aid students in integrating their Christian beliefs with their academic training, whether the vocational goals are religious or secular. Upon completion of the communication major, the student should have achieved at least-one of the following: (1) the theoretical knowledge and proficiency necessary for graduate work; (2) the training and knowledge necessary for classroom teaching or the basic preparation in speech pathology; (3) the background required for vocations in the communication-related fields. The communication curriculum also provides supporting courses for several other majors . COMMUNICATION MAJOR Students who plan to major in communication should obtain early departmental counseling in setting up their individual programs in the specific concentration of their choice . This program must be approved and on file with the department at the beginning of the student's junior year . Department Major: 30 units , of which 24 must be upper division, including 458, 478, and either 340 or 386. Speech pathology emphasis substitute 472 for 340 or 386. (18 units should be taken within one emphasis.) Any additional units may be selected outside the concentration . Majors are expected to take Com 100 to fulfill the general education requirement, but it does not count toward the 30 unit major in communication . Department Minor: 18 units, of which 12 must be upper division, including 458, 478 . (12 units should be taken within one emphasis) . HUMANITIES MAJOR: COMMUNICATION CONCENTRATION Communication may be used as the area of concentration for the humanities major (p . 59) . This concentration is basically a minor in communication, but greater flexibility is possible through departmental counseling.

INTERDISCIPLINARY MAJOR IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES

The remaining 15 units must be upper division courses and may be selected from any major. The rationale for the selection of the 15 units must be presented in the form of a paper, approved, and on file with the Communication Department at the beginning of the student's junior year. CORE COURSES: applicable to any of the concentrations. 100 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION (3) Overview of the major with lectures pertaining to public address , forensics, drama, speech pathology and mass media. Experience in the preparation and delivery of significant ideas. 440 COMMUNICATION INTERNSHIP (1-3) Limited to qualified seniors who wish to gain professional experience working with a secular or Christian mass media organization. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units . Permission of Internship Coordinator required. 450 COMMUNICATION PRACTICUM (1-3) Directed practical experience in the various fields of communication. Permission of the department must be secured the semester prior to enrolling for course .

The interdisciplinary major in communication studies seeks to provide the student with an opportunity to investigate the process, nature and effects of human communication. It is uniquely designed to permit the goal-oriented student maximum latitude in creating an individualistic course of study in consultation with the Interdisciplinary Communication Advisement Committee. This committee will be comprised of three members : The Communication Department Chairperson, another faculty member from the Communication Department, and a faculty member outside the Communication Department. This program permits the student to focus on a special problem or some defined aspect of communication in order to maintain continuity in his/her academic program. In addition to meeting the general education requirement, the following 15 units required of all communication majors would be required of interdisciplinary majors in communication studies: 6 units 3 in Written Communication 3 in Oral Communication in addition to Com. 100 9 units upper division: Communication 458, 478 and either, Communication 340 or 386
