The objectives of the Music Department are: 1) to provide opportunities for all students to study music as an essential part of a liberal education; 2) to serve as a professional school preparing music specialists for teaching, graduate study, performance, the ministry of church music, and other careers in music; and 3) to prepare all of our graduates for effective contribution to the musical life of the evangelical church. Entrance Requirements: Admission into Biola College does not guarantee admission into the Music Department program. In addition to the regular college entrance requirements a student desiring to enter the Music Department must complete a Music Department application for admission. All entering students also must take an examination for the purpose of placement into the proper music theory course. Specific information concerning the content of the examination and suggestions for preparation are available by writing the Music Department Office. It is also expected that the entering student be capa~le of pursuing college level work in his applied area. Specific information as to level of literature and technical studies is available from the Music Department Office . Keyboard Proficiency: All non-keyboard music majors must pass a keyboard proficiency examination prior to the granting of a degree in music. Since keyboard facility is important to every music major, students are expected to meet keyboard proficiency requirements prior to their junior year. Specific information regarding the keyboard examination is available from the Music Department Office . All entering non-keyboard music majors must take a placement examination with the Class Piano Coordinator for assignment to an appropriate section of class piano. All students must remain enrolled in class piano every semester until proficiency is obtained. Activities: The Music Department provide_s opportunities for experience in several types of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including the Biola Chorale, Chamber Music Ensembles, College Singers, Chamber Orchestra and Symphonic Band. All are open to non-music majors as well as music majors by audition at the beginning of each semester. Individual performance opportunities are offered through weekly student recitals, weekly music-at-noon concerts, and junior and senior recitals . The Music Department concert series features outstanding guest artists as well as its own widely-known facu lty. Opportunities off Campus : The stature of Los Angeles as a music center provides exceptional opportunities for hearing the world's leading artists, as well as outstanding college and church music organizations. Service Opportunities: The Los Angeles metropolitan area furnishes many opportunities for remunerative service in music. There are frequent openings for competent organists, church choir directors, soloists, accompanists, and instrumentalists. Scholarships: Music scholarships and performance awards in varying amounts are available to qualified students. Majors : A professional degree (Bachelor of Music) is offered with emphasis in one of the following areas: applied music, composition and music education. Students interested in pursuing one of these emphases must demonstrate a high level of performance potential and commitment to music as a profession. A non-professional degree (Bachelor of Arts) with a major in music is also offered. Candidates for the Bachelor of Music degree are exempt from the general education requirement in foreign language, literature, fine arts, and need take only five units in mathematics and /or science. All music majors must complete a basic core of 36 units of music which consists of the following: 60C, 105, 111, 112, 117, 206, 211, 212, 215, 216, 304, 311, 312, 315, 323, 340(4), 405, 440 . Specific additional requirements for the available degree options for the Bachelor of Music are: 1. Music Education: 42 units 161, 162, 263, 264, 320(6), 324, 334, 365, 366, 420(2), 467, 468, 470 Applied Secondary (4), Ensemble (8), Professional Education or electives (9) . 2.
