For now, the focus is refining their process and sharing what they’ve learned. "We want to be an open-source platform. We want others to see why this works — and do it too."

His advice to new builders?

"Follow certifications. Follow energy raters. Talk to Green Built Alliance. Use your critical thinking. Don’t reinvent the wheel —but understand why the wheel works." The Final Word When asked what he hopes someone notices when they walk into a Nicholson and Sun home, Donald pauses. "What if my answer is: nothing? The most important things are in the walls, the systems, the way it performs. A high- performance home shouldn’t look different. It should just be different." And then, almost as a footnote, the origin story returns. "This is all his brainchild," Donald says, speaking of his father. "I'm just trying to bear fruit to that vision."

Because the smartest homes don’t show off. They just work.

Want to build a home that respects the land it stands on? Let Nicholson & Sons show you how. www.nicholsonandsun.com
