Her own story fuels that commitment. As a young renter yearning to keep chickens, harvest rainwater, and practice backyard permaculture, she often found herself blocked by lease restrictions or disinterested landlords. “It was nearly impossible unless you were in a teardown house no one cared about,” she says.
She wanted to change that narrative.
“I always imagined, if I ever became a property owner or steward, I would create those opportunities for people - even if they’re only here for two years. They could move in and immediately have fruit trees, rainwater systems, gardens… They wouldn’t have to build it all from scratch.
They’d just get to live it. ”
Belonging, Interdependence, and Ancestral Wisdom
Terra Futura’s mission speaks of belonging, interdependence, and ancestral wisdom — not as abstract ideals, but as daily practices. “We want this to be more than just a set of houses where people sleep and leave again,” Kelsey says. “We want people to feel rooted. We want them to come together around shared activities like tending the gardens, cooking together, canning, preserving. Things our grandmothers knew how to do.”
