SPECIAL NOTE Admission Requirements: admission into Biota University does not guarantee admission into clinical nursing. A student may be admitted to the department of baccalaureate nursing upon meeting the requirements for university admission, including high school chemistry and algebra with at least a grade of "C" and/or passing an entrance examination in these two subjects, and (1) completing the prescribed pre­ nursing curriculum (available from the nursing department) with a minimum grade of C (2.0) in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and Conceptual Framework For Nursing, and a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or above; (2) filing the departmen­ tal application and paying the required non-refundable $20 deposit by February 15; (3) submitting proof of current certi­ fication in cardiopulmonary resuscitation through the Amer­ ican Red Cross or American Heart Association; and (4) meet­ ing approval of the faculty of the department of nursing. Applicants whose educational and professional experiences qualify them for advanced standing are welcome. Those in­ tending to challenge nursing courses should make an appoint­ ment with the department of nursing as soon as accepted by the university. Requirements for Students Accepted into the Nursing Program: A student is required to have at his / her own expense a yearly physical examination and specific laboratory tests and immuniza­ tions by June 15. Students will not be permitted in the clinical agency without this. Each student is assessed for liability insur­ ance through the university when participating in clinical courses. Record of comparable liability insurance coverage for the licensed RN students must be on file with the department of nursing. The university and cooperating agencies assume no responsibility for illness or accidents occurring during the school program. A student must arrange for his / her own transportation to clinical agencies as the university does not provide transporta­ tion . The senior nursing student in distributive nursing must have a valid California driver's license and access to a car. Theory and clinical must be taken concurrently in courses with a clinical component. A student must earn a minimum grade of 2.0 in both theory and clinical nursing courses , and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 in order to progress in nursing . Courses may be repeated one time only. Students withdrawing at a failing level will be permitted to repeat the course one time only. Withdrawal at a failing level is permitted two times only. Students placed on departmental probation more than two times may be subject to dismissal from the nursing program. Unsafe clinical nursing practice, regardless of GPA, is grounds for dismissal from the nursing program. It is recommended that microbiology (BIO 221) be taken prior to Nursing of the Family I and II. Students must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 to take microbiology concurrent with Nursing of the Family I. Students will not be advanced to Level lI without microbiology. A minimum grade of C is required in both microbiology and statistics . Department Major: Biological Science 221 , 271, 272; Chemis­ try 101, 102 (totaling 17 science units); Nursing 200,301 , 302 , 400, 410, 420, 430,441 , 442, 450. Supporting courses: Three units of each of the following: intercultural studies , sociology, Psychology 200 and statistics. The general education requirement for a foreign language for nursing majors is two years of the same high school language or four units of a college language. Nursing majors are exempt from general education requirements of litera­ ture (3) and history (4 of 8 units required).

The annual Commitment Service is financed by assessing each pre-nursing and clinical nursing student fifty cents each semester. 200 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR NURSING (2) Concepts of adaptation to stress as related to synergistic man, current trends and emerging role of the professional nurse. Two tracts offered: generic student and registered nurse student. Pre­ requisite to all nursing courses. (C*) 205 SPIRITUAL ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION (3) Use of the nursing process for identifying and meeting the spir­ itual needs of clients, including utilization of prayer, Scripture and other resources. Open to Registered Nurses, Licensed Voca­ tional Nurses and all nursing majors. Offered interterm only. 300 PROFESSIONAL NURSING SEMINAR ( 1-3) A transition seminar designed to facilitate socialization into bac­ calaureate professional nursing. Designed for transfer-challenge students. 30 I NURSING OF THE FAMILY I - THEORY (5) Stress-adaptation process from young adult through late maturity. Implementation of nursing process is focused upon promotion of adaptation in the intrapersonal , interpersonal and community systems. Prerequisite: 200. (C*) 301 NURSING OF THE FAMILY I - CLINICAL (5) Clinical component of 30 I. (C*) 302 NURSING OF THE FAMILY II - THEORY (5) Continuation of 301 with greater emphasis on patho-physiology and stress response process. Prerequisite: 301. (C*) 302 NURSING OF THE FAMILY II - CLINICAL (4) The study of (I) the effects produced by chemicals; (2) the site(s) at which and mechanism(s) by which the biological effects are produced; (3) the fate of a chemical agent in the body: its absorp­ tion , distribution and elimination; (4) the factors which influence the safety and effectiveness of an agent ; (5) the toxic effects of chemicals as well as of the mechanisms and conditions of occur­ rence of these harmful effects; and (6) the application of drugs in the prevention, treatment or diagnosis of disease and their use in purposeful aIterative of normal functions. Offered interterm only. 320 DIRECTED INDIVIDUAL STUDIES (1-3) Permits students to pursue special interests related to the profes­ sion of nursing. Open to clinical nursing majors only with written consent of instructor. May be repeated with different content up to a total of six units. 400 EPISODIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING­ THEORY (2) Concepts related to nursing of adults with problems of adaptation resulting in psychopathology. Focus is on the application of the nursing process to problems of psychopathology. Prerequisite: 302. (C*) 400 EPISODIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSING­ CLINICAL (2) Application of theoretical content in an episodic patient care setting. (C*) 410 NURSING OF THE FAMILY Ill - THEORY (6) A family-centered approach utilizing the nursing process and applying stress-adaptation theory related to childbearing, child­ rearing and child health in episodic and distributive settings.
